Car Cover

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum... i've had my Mx5 for nearly 3 years now (NC Mx5), it was always parked undercover either at work or at home, but i moved to an apartment without indoor parking in Sydney. In the past few weeks i've noticed i have to wash my car alot more often as it collects alot of dust off the street and when it rains it looks really dirty! Well I just started a new job and it comes with a company car... so i don't drive my car as often (hardly ever) mainly on weekends and some week nights. Since its summer it gets really hot, sunlight, bird poo, general dust, leaves etc.... I'm looking to buy a cover for my car.

I've done some research on the internet, K-Mart, Big W and Repco in my area and most of them looked relatively cheap ($40-50), all i know is what get what you pay for... so those covers can't be that good.

On the internet i've looked at this one CAR COVER TYVEK Ultimate Car Cover Protection size: S-M (http://www.sorijen.com.au/product_info. ... s_id=15826) its around $85 plus delivery ends up at around $100... but can only purchase that particular cover on the internet, the likes of Kmart, Big W etc only have the cheaper versions of covers.

I've also heard some good things about the Kenco Tyvek covers, but on their website it doesn't stat where i could purchase them, or the price...

So what i've gathered is Tyvek is a good material for covers... do you guys have any other recommendations?

Plus the antenna... is that a problem? as it seems really long and sometimes fragile...

Based on what you mentioned about your aerial, I'm assuming you have the NA6 (89-93) model. If that's the case, and you plan to cover it, I'd remove the aerial. Most guys in the same situation, do it regularly.

I don't know much about car covers, but MX5 Mania has one that might be worth a look. Click here.

No its not the NA 6... its the 2006 version...

that antenna... i'm not quite sure if its removable... is it?

The one on mx5mania is a little bit out of my price range those ones are $250+

If you look on this page there is info on this subject. viewforum.php?f=28. The material is Tyvek and the cover is custom made to fit your car. The maker already has a pattern for an NB 2001. Pashn8 might give you an opinion.

I did not get the link right - try again viewtopic.php?f=28&t=33889. Incidentally if you have an NC an NB cover will not be right. A measure and pattern would need to be made. She must be able to adjust for aerials as the covers are made for all sorts of weird and wonderful classics - with fins klaxon horns and the like.

When you do get your car cover, make sure the car is squeeky clean BEFORE you put the cover on it.
Car covers do move around due to wind, animals and other unmentionables, and if your car has any dust on it, it will act like diamond encrusted sand paper on your paintwork.
Make sure when you use the cover that it is held down tightly, to minimise any movement, so it won't rub on the paint.

Along with getting one that is waterproof, I'd also get one that will provide some protection from Hailstones.

Supercheap Auto has one on special this week. It's a car cover with padded top for hailstones protection. Not sure of the quality though. I guess you'd just have to take a look.

yes... hailstones... at least if our roof gets pelted with hailstones, you can replace it, unlike most cars............................ where panel beaters have to fix it.

I think someone already mentioned that the aerial can be unscrewed. You mentioned that the car was parked on the street. Personally I would not leave my car on the street with an expensive cover- it can be removed so easily.

oh cool, i must of missed the part of the aerial can be unscrewed. I also considered the cover being stolen, since it is parked on the street, on one of the website they sell cable locks for covers... but not sure if that would fit all covers/brands.

My other question is would it be better letting the sun shine on the car everyday and just wash it every week, or buy a cover... with a possibility of it scratching the car or the cover getting stolen...

What I was going to say as well. I unfortunately park mine on the street too. I keep mine under a cover whenever i am not going to use it for a few days. I keep it tightly attached using large bulldog clips and make sure it is clean before I do so. I also have a cover which has a soft inside lining.
