I've just bought an NA6, and I'm wanting to move the head unit from my old car into the 5. The problem is, the 'tombstone' trim piece has pretty much shattered, so I need a new one. I've found I can get one from MX5plus, but they offer an 'old' and a 'new' version, saying that aftermarket head units fit the new version better.
I'm putting in a Pioneer DEH-P6950IB, and I just want to know if its worth buying the newer tombstone for an extra $40 or if I can still get a decent looking install on the older tombstone.
If anyone has any photos of their HU install on the 'old' one, that would be awesome too.

Sorry, no pics, but i have a Sony Cassette / CD Changer head unit in my NA as well as a "generic" single DIN pocket ....
doesnt look like any odd fitment issues, (was fitted when i bought the car, may have even been an option ..... dunno)
good luck

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour ... you're gonna see some serious s**t.

If its just a normal single DIN head unit fit the upgrated tombstone. This will look a lot nicer. The original one is 2.5 Din which means that there will be a gap between your head unit and the blanking plate or cubby. The upgraded one is also slightly recessed which means the head unit will sit more flush. I'll see if I can find some pictures to show the difference.

Sorry for the lack of close ups but you should get the idea. The updated tombstone allows the radio to sit much more flush and looks a lot better IMO.

The original stereo is 1.5 DIN and fits perfectly with the original tombstone. Its only when you fit a one DIN stereo that it looks a bit dodgy like the first picture.
kazjim, yours probebly cracked. I replaced my original one because it began to crack in a few areas, I would assume that the previous owner of yours made the same choice as me and upgraded to the later one.

Thanks Bensale, thats exactly what I wanted to see. Certainly a very nice looking interior you have there
Is it a specific mazda pocket that goes below the head unit, or is there just a generic one that fits? Does anybody know where I can get one in Brisbane?
Thanks for the help everyone, by the way!

Thanks mate, my pleasure. I'm happy with the interior, still looks OEM (IMO) as it all matches quite well but isn't as boring as the black interior is.
The pocket I bought was from a Mazda dealer and I belive cost around $15. MX5 plus may have them too. I believe some generic ones fit but came remember off the top of my head. I doubt that they would be much cheaper than the Mazda one though.

I paid $9 for mine at Strathfield Car Radios . . . .
Good fit, specific to Mazdas, has a small lip on the bottom side to stop stuff sliding out
Good luck

I bought my single din pocket from subaru, i've just ordered an updated tombstone from MX5 Plus.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
