Andrew's 1994 Clubman (ex Fuzzlet)

Postby daffyflyer » Tue Jan 06, 2009 5:18 pm

Well I guess its time I introduced myself, given how long i have been lurking for.

Sit around while i tell you a long and boring tale!

About a month ago I bought Fuzzlet's Clubman, a rather eventful journey, involving me and the misses bussing up to sydney from canberra, staggering 2km in the pouring rain to the WRONG hotel, then 3km back
turns out there are 2 "Y hotels" in Sydney, and the missus' Nokia 6210 can't tell the difference :P

We picked up the car and swung by old pac/pie in the sky(by mistake! what luck! ) and drove it like i stole it, grinning all the way and then went tomania for a pod and all was good (paticularly the fact that the '5 had enough fuel in it to get back to canberra, thank fuzzlet, you are a top bloke!) until! *dramatic music*.... it died....

We had parked it at a servo and when we went to start it again, it cranked, but did not fire.

Sat around headscratching for a while then called the NRMA, they looked at it, poked the alarm wiring, checked for a spark (none), and then left.

We called for a tow to a sparky and generally felt rather unhappy.
Whilst waiting for the tow to arrive some random truckie came to look at it and said: I bet its a dead relay.
He bridged a 2 pins where the main relay was and volia! it starts

After thanking him many times we finaly have an unevetful (if slightly windy) trip back, with both me and my girlfriend steadfastly refusing to put the top up, no matter how cold and dark it got! (hey, its our first convertable, cant put the roof on :P)

Me and the missus decide its the coolest car ever, and corners like crazy, but needs more angry noise and powah!

So have had it home for a while now, been having lots of fun driving it, almost never putting the top on or slowing down for bends, and have built it a mania style intake pipe (will post pics when im home from work, its quite ghetto)

Bought some npower extractors from the forum.

Went to the local wreckers to seek out a used cat and muffler, resulting in me and the lady rummaging through a pile of exhaust bits in the wreckers yard, discussing pipe sizes and which cat would flow best as well as gloating about how good it shall sound afterwards (God i love my girlfriend :D)

Took it for rego inspection and failed on bad left headlight pattern (might be a bulb they say... errr the lights all come on its not a bulb) bald rear tyres and oil leaks (oh noes! it seeps oil like a normal car!)

Currently tracking down some Toyo R1R tyres to replace the current RE001s (and solve the bald rears)

Listed below is the future plans for the motor (Its the only thing that i think can be improved, the suspension and brakes are awesome)

N*power Extractors (Already Bought)
2.25" - 2.5" Exhaust (Already got a used cat and centre res)
Dual Exit Rear Muffler (coming from fuzzlet)
DIY Mania Style Intake w/Mania Pod - (Already Build - Sounds Schweet)
Tighe 805C Cams
Wolf3d EMS (came with car)
Wiseco 11:1 Pistons (something im considering, i don't mind the cost, as long as they provide a bit of a benifit and don't make it run only on race fuel/mermaid tears & rhino horn! )

Any comments, ideas on this engine plan?
Im not looking for something really quick, just a motor more like my other car (Lancer with a Satria GTI motor + exhaust, 110kw (77kw ATW) 1.8, sounds nice, pulls like a train)

Also if i get struck with a case of the stupids I convince some engeneering student freinds to build me an AE101 ITB adaptor... maybe :P

Only non engine plans are getting it painted Mazda Stormy Blue, and getting some Black OZ Superturismo wheels for it (will post photochop later!), plus a BD roll bar and fire extinguisher & Blue triangle : :)

Anyway, thats pretty much the end of my random rant about my new car, need less to say i love the thing to bits and shall be modding it lots, and will keep everyone posted with far too much information and piccies!

Congrats - also bought my Clubman in Sydney when I lived in CBR - journey not as eventful as yours though.

Mods are always a personal thing, but I'd be leaving the pistons until last as per your list - indeed I wouldn't bother unless you had a very specific outcome in mind & were doing other stuff.

Whlie I like blue, I wouldn't do any mods that weren't easily reversable unless you were prepared to spend $$$ - it's a Clubman, & while it's YOUR Clubman, it will put some potential buyers off come time to sell.

That said, ownership also needs to be enjoyable...

Yeah, sounds good.

Agreed it might reduce the resale value, but frankly, if im going to spend like $8k or so on mods then i think i have given up any hope of getting money back from it, its my dream car and I don't think i will get rid of it for a long time (And I dont care how original it is, i still don't want a white car) :D

2.5inch exhaust will be too big on a naturally aspirated car (unless you've spent mega bugs on ringing every last inch out of it). 2.25 should be good.

Also I hate working on white cars, I keep getting fingerprints on it!

2.5 too big? well, i already have the car and resinator in that size, so im not sure its worth changing that now :S

I don't think it will make a great difference to power in terms of being too big, but it might be boomy i guess

I think you just got unlucky with the NRMA. When my main relay died, the NRMA guy worked out what the issue was pretty quickly.

Anyhow, nice purchase. Looks like you've got a good list of mods planned as well.

Yeah, the NRMA guy was great, he just managed to over look the one thing that was actually wrong, although even with a new relay it still does not work, its a wiring issue i think

Sounds like a nice list for a nice car, but I'm surprised someone hasn't yelled PICS! yet

therefore, PICS!

Congratulations. Lets hope that's the last of your little motoring mishaps, and more of the thing that makes a MX5 so enjoyable.
