Chrome Fuel Door on NC - comments please!

Postby CoffeeBoss » Tue Dec 30, 2008 4:49 pm

So, I was quite ambivalent about the whole chrome fuel door look on the NC until fairly recently. It started with approving glances at them on the new Audi TT's, which i thought looked quite ok. Then i saw some NC's with them at the Illawarra Fly Run, and decided i 'needed' one.

The result is, quite honestly, blingier than i had hoped.

In lower light it looks better.... i'm thinking perhaps if it was less chrome, it might suit the car more. Or should i just revert back to standard? Interested to hear what people think - suggestions, criticisms, questions, murmurs of discontent all welcome!

Looks good. Leave it on.

It ties in the other chrome parts of your car (ie. chrome strips on the deck, tail & head light trims, and to a lesser extent the silver alloys).

My SP came with one as standard and I'll not have it any other way.

If you think it looks too bling.... you could attack it with a scourer?
or some light abrasive...
give it the brushed look

I reckon it would fit in better if you had a few more matching accents?

I think you just trying to give yourself a reason to not like it. Just leave it on, most nc's have it anyway for a reason.. it looks good.!

Haha, classic Wun! We are talking about an NC though... :D AND, it has a rubber seal which the standard item doesn't so technically there is an improvement!

Sure, but your still thinking along those lines (shudder)

See, i have been thinking along these lines. More matching accents would be too much chrome for my tastes, which leaves the scourer option. I really need something to practice on before i go attacking it though. I mean, that 'brushed aluminium' look is simply that, right? I just dread attacking it and being left with a part that looks like it fell off the car at some point.

I am not sure if the chrome is on plastic or metal but in either instance using any abrasive is a crazy idea. All it will do is scratch the surface and you will not achieve a so called brushed or satin look. Scouring or scratching the chrome may also introduce a micro crack(s) and then the chrome will start to lift from the substrate. Earlier comments that it was in keeping with some of the chrome look on the rear of the car make sense to me. Mazda are currently using metallised ( high lustre appearance) bezels on their rear lamps so the theme is in place.

If it's the same as the SP one dont use anything more harsh on it that pure wax. I found out the hard way when I tried to clean mine with chrome cleaner. It wont go brushed it'll just look pox.

Looks fine how it is to me, though isn't there a satin one available too? Or am I getting it confused with the RX8 one?

Apologies for not making it clear... the comment was made purely in jest...
I would certainly think tbird would think very carefully before doing anything so permanent to something that retails well in the $200 mark?

How about covering it with some satin contact of sorts?
Or would that kill the finish as well?

Oh, that was understood! I don't take me too serious, so don't you make that mistake either!

Actually, since i purchased this from Moss Motors with a bunch of other things before the dollar went south, it came in under that thankfully.

Garry could have the tip here, i believe. I might hit it with some wax before i decide i am done with it.

It's a pity, because Moss Motors only list the one finish on their website, but the image supplied does not really illustrate just how 'chrome' it is!

Still: It does say chrome. I should have known better :D

If you want a truth, honest and short answer- It looks crap.

Even if it was on an NA or NB it would still look crap, because it looks very tacky and cheap.

Unless it has that zoom engineering style, where has the bludge etc.
