Crisis Averted and Fix for young players !

Postby kazjim » Thu Jan 01, 2009 7:24 pm

So, for the last two weeks of driving my Na6, it occasionally developed a little 'stutter' ... a very rythmical surging ...

would become more pronounced as the ambient heat went up and the fuel guage went down ...

My first thought was to give the lil beast a full service, all filters, oil, fluids etc.. made a HUGE difference, BIG power gain, much smoother and happier ....

.....but the stuttering returned

Until today ... was out in the stupid heat, and it started ....

So was thinking that maybe the fuel pump was struggling with the heat ..... fix ? pour in some cold fuel ....

as I opened the fuel cap, a loud sucking sound .......

Guess my Vented Fuel cap isnt as vented as I thought  Fel pump was fighting against the vacuum of a missing 20 liters of fuel !

Problem fixed ....

Short story:
If you get a weird surging in the heat and low fuel, just unscrew your fuel cap and continue on your way !!

Now, a quick question, can anyone post a pic of their NA6 Fuel cap to see if mine is a 'real' one or a 'servo-special' ?

Cheers all
J

I get that all the time when re-fuelling. On hot days but the tank is nearly empty. I've never had performance issues though.

My fuel cap is orange. No pic avail. sorry

I seem to remember reading that with the NBs if you don't tighten up the cap properly you can get a CEL code.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Check Engine Light or something to that effect I believe

Basically where a little light somewhere, typically either on the dash or the ecu itself, flashes a cartian number of times to explain that something has gone wrong. Normally a series of long and short flashes which then correspond to a specific problem in the service manual.

Nahh, definitely sucking, same thing used to happen on my 68 Mini - non vented cap ... every 300 Miles you had to open the fuel cap or the car would just stop running

I'll get around to checking the Vapour Canister and see if there is any blockage there . . . otherwise I'll try a replacmement cap ...

Cheers
