I've never done it but IIRC it can be done - sort of.......

The block is like any other B6 block. If you change the plumbing around to the right holes you will get it to fit into the engine bay and mate up with the heater, radiator, etc. Put the stock MX5 inlet manifold on and it is getting better.

The down side is that the turbo points the wrong way and therefore the B6T manifold is useless.

In the tech section there is a writeup on doing this to a BP engine. Good writeup too.

Can be done, but not a direct bolt in swap though.

The Familia engines (I don't think the Astina ever got these engines from the factory) will need a few things changed over using some parts from an MX-5 engine.

Familia has distributor instead of the MX-5s Camshaft angle sensor, change that over & you'll need to ditch the standard Familia ECU as well. Not enough room in the MX-5 engine bay to fit the distributor, unless you cut a hole into the firewall..

Turbo & turbo manifold won't fit in the MX-5 engine bay either so will need a custom manifold or an aftermarket version from AVO, Flyin Miata etc.

Will need to knock out a welsch plug on the Familia engine block above where the waterpump is, then connect the MX-5's water plumbing fittings.

The oil dipstick is in a different location between the two engines, I can't remember if it actually needed to be changed or not. Not hard to do though.

I think there might be a difference in oil sumps as well.

Use the bottom end out of the Familia GTX/GTR and the head off the MX5 and you are sorted.

Makes it easier to match turbo/supercharger kits as well my friend.

That is what I've been doing for close to 10 yrs now 8)

considering that the same engines (except for the BPD) were also in the Caprix XR2, Ford Laser TX3, nope they aren't hard to find :)

Possible.
Not a good gearbox....they were shite actually. The centre diff was not 1:1 but more like 0.94:1. When 'locked' for traction in a rally car they tended to grenade.

A very good friend persevered with one in the NSW Rally championship for a couple of season before parking it in a tree down Narooma way. He bought an Escort after that.
