Style bar VS Roll bar

I don't know about that one... Put an MX5 on a skid pan going sideways at 60km/h and put a 4wd on a skid pan going 60km/h and see which one will look like it's going to roll first. I would say that the more common SUV would be more likely to be involved in a roll over accident than MX5s when going at "normal" speeds on public roads.

Of course this only applies to every day driving, as when you're on the track you're exceeding the speed limits set on public roads. Even then, it's quite difficult to get the car to roll.

How many MX5's have you seen roll on the road or the track?
There may have been the odd instance but not often, style bars will help stiffen your car up, look good and give some proctetion if you did happen to roll your MX5.
You mainly need a full roll bar for racing requirements (Cams)

*sigh* In the past week I have seen three cars on their roofs on public roads. None of those drivers expected their cars to roll over. One was a current model holden ute, on its own on a straight stretch of the M4. You will never know when your car is going to be involved in an accident - that's why they are called accidents. This argument is like the issue of helmets on motor bikes - if you don't value your head don't wear one. If you like to take risks, by all means do so. If you prefer to err on the safe side, get a roll bar.

Style bar VS Roll bar

If you want proper protection & add serious stiffness. Its a no brainer.

Style bars do help in both......but this mousetrap thing apart from copping a truck in the back end .......I've never heard or seen pictures of these so called mousetraps actually being a mousetrap in a roll over.

one of the fellows on this forum rolled his NA6......looking at the car at mania, even just the roof ,which was up when he rolled, helped save his head. Every little bit helps, even a style bar. But this mousetrap myth. Not sure

I think Myth Busters are in order.

Is the BD rollbar easy to install? can you DIY or better leave it to the pro? Will I get defect by a copper if it is in polish??? do I need a engineer certificate for a roll bar?

I really prefer the look of the twin hoop style bar but as many have mentioned I also value my safety. I would do some more research to see if I can find a twin hoop style roll bar.

cheers guys

You can get defected, if you will is another thing, as posted in another thread, lots of people on this forum have them (BD bars) without a problem, but some have been defected. (at least 2 this year)

If you don't go for "spirited" drives then you probably don't need one, the mx5 rollovers that I know of have have been caused when the cars have under-steered, left the road, gone up or down into an embankment or rock face then flipped over.

It's up to you really.

Gessus alex.....I like your theory there . But if that,s going to happen I'd rather be safe than sorry. I guess I'm just old & soft.

A copper can defect a car from the factory if he/she wants to. They are within thier rights to do so. A sensible copper wouldn't But if he/she wants your backside......I'd prefer a defect for a roll bar rather than EPA.

I just got done for driving unlicensed (licence expired  ). But I got let off for the speeding.....I guess he thought a $400 fine was ample....rather than instant loss of licence.

My point is.....A roll bar is a worthwhile defect in My opinion if the police is trying to defect me for whatever just to get me.

Ditto.
We all have insurance too, right? Why is that....?

Check out photos of Novice1's car and my car in the garage section and you will have another idea of what a roll-bar can look like installed.
Did anyone mention that scuttle shake is reduced markedly with a properly installed roll-bar? This in itself is a worthwhile reason for getting one.

Style bar VS Roll bar

i got stopped for a random breath test recently and the officer called in my plate to see if my rego was paid up. it was 2 weeks overdue....   totally honest mistake, i just forgot to pay it on time.

anyway, she was nice enough to tell me to pull over, get on my mobile phone and pay immediately with my credit card over the phone. she had a good look over my car too.... if she had wanted to be a prick she could have given me a $500 fine for the rego and a defect for the rollbar. but i was polite, and obviously very embarassed about the rego slip up so she let me off.

if you play your cards right and have some respect, you'll find most cops are decent people. of course some of them are just on a power trip or in a bad mood, but touch wood , i've never struck one yet. i've heard stories from people about prick coppers but i always wonder how they approached the situation, and if they had've been more polite to the officer then the result may have been different.

anyway, this is a long winded way of saying that if you want the rollbar, just install it and don't be a dick if you get pulled over. most of the time you should be just fine, altho if you do strike trouble, just take it on the chin (don't get argumentative that can only result in more trouble for you) and move on.

easy enough, if you are mechanically minded / skilled. i had a friend help me with mine, he had fitted one to his car so knew what he was doing.

what i reckon people should do is be totally polite with them, until you don't get your way.

i was pulled over by a copper 2 months ago for speeding. he let me off the hook after i was polite to him. he couldn't have nailed me anyhow, had no proof i was speeding.

I always be polite to a copper anyway. I am not too worry about the roll bar getting defected, just want to know whether it is illegal or not.

Sounds like Brown Davis Rollbar is the popular choice.

Aw, condescending. Adoreable.

Don't let the post count fool you. I know the difference between a roll bar and a style bar

I love the look of a beefy padded roll bar.

The picture that you posted is the Brown Davis roll bar, I believe Fatty thought that you saw it to be a style bar rather than a roll bar, hence his well meaning comment. The ones with the up and over are full roll cages. I personally love the look of the roll bar, although as I spend most of my time on the street I've decided to not get a roll bar... Yet.
