The NB has a rod connecting to the unlock "button" on the door leaver which could theoretically be used.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

ordered a 2nd hand one from mania ... (takes a few days)

according to the alarm guy .... he said it ran a "cable" ... not a rod ....

i haven't actually had a good look myself ... when i sent him the url to the Jaycar ones he said "if one of those would work i would have changed it for you the other day because i have half a dozen of them in my ute"

so .... he did consider using an aftermarket one on the spot right at the time when he had taken my door apart

rod/cable i don't know myself .... i'll find out when i speak to him next time

funny i have exact same problem with the jaycar actuator i have put in 4 months ago.. its dead and confirmed by the multimeter :) got a new one today for 9 dollars... so anyone out there buying jaycar actuators do not throw out the receipts as they come with 1 year warranty and they break...

Hope i'm not hyjacking your thread, you might find this interesting.

I had a bit more of a look at my passenger site central locking tonight.

Firstly, my theory about electromagnets is wrong

There are 3 wires on the plug in the door and 2 from the plug to the locking mechanism (the black earth wire isn't used).

The difference between lock/unlock is 12volts + or - (Can't remember which way around it is)

The locking mechanism is controlled by a motor and a set of gears that lock/unlock depending on the direction the motor is spinning.

So in my case (it unlocks but doesn't lock) I don't think it can be a wiring fault at the connector because it obviously completes a circuit to spin one direction.

I hooked the lock up to a 12v battery and it locks/unlocks fine, but once connected to my car (free from the door without any connecting rods etc) it will only unlock.

Perhaps in my MX-5 there's a strong enough current to unlock but not to unlock the door. Perhaps it's a dud relay?

Hey Okibi,

You're fine posting it here, every1 will only benifit from this extra info :D

I'm not very technical at all, but in your case, sounds like a relay problem doesn't it?

if there are 3 wires, then it could work like, 2 wires +12, 1 wire ground..

lets say you have green(g), red(r) and white(w) wires, then g would be +12 for locking, r would be +12 for unlocking and w would be ground.. in your case you do not get +12 from g when you lock the door which i reckon leads to problem with relay of the locking/unlocking mechanisim or wire problem (green wire is broken or disconnected somehow)

i hope i make sense...

Yup the black ISN'T used, ie. no metal connector in the socket OR wire from the socket (going to the lock)

I think they've just added it so Wun can remove it and reduce the weight of his MX-5 by 5grams.

One advice for people who prefer to opt for the J-car unit is to wrap the actuator with plastic sheet to prevent water damage. My master actuator needed replacement after water got into it. Also, a small drop of Loctite blue threadlock on the clamp will help heaps in preventing it coming loose after repeater use.
