I hope the driver of the rolled SE wasnt too tall :shock: That windscreen ended up pretty flat.

Chapter 2...CSI Bossley Park.

Ok...so it was time to start stripping out the SE...after having a good look at the body pretty much the only part we could salvage is the front chassis...so the car is going to be completely pulled apart and cut in half to keep the front for future use.

It was a bit of a mystery as to what had happened to this car...there was eveidence that the car had been stolen...but after I started pulling the trim out I found all sorts of drug impliments(no drugs)...car keys,house keys,all sorts of wierd paperwork,...so I put in a call to CSI Bossley park and after some Forensic investigation I figured the car had be carjacked,or the keys had been stolen and the car taken and used for robberies and other dubious stuff...not really sure how the car ended up crashing but I am pretty sure it was going fast when I happened.

This is a photo of the cars in the garage with the smoke screen after we started it.

Chapter 3...The Rolling Shell...

When I first thought about this build I wanted to put all the SE bits in to a NA shell...there was a NA available at the same time...Robo made me realise that it would be much more sensible to build a SE replica, so that's the way we went...I will build a NA/SE one day...

The call went out to Chris at MX5 racing and he had this red NB8A it had been imported by Chris because it had a lot of good bits on it, and had low ks... the wing that is on the Green car actually came off this one...the interior had been stripped out, all the running gear was gone, luckily it already had ABS so this was going to save us quite a bit of work...pretty much perfect for what we wanted...I was hoping the paint was a bit dodgy because I wanted to paint it yellow but after a good polish the paint was in very good condition.

The bonnet that came on the car was Crystal blue and a bit bent so that went straight to Hume Smash Repairs...the instructions to Denis were make it straight and paint it gloss black.

Everything was coming out of the SE and going in to this shell, so we set about stripping it back basically to a bare rolling shell...we were using none of the NB8A wiring loom or braking system apart from the ABS wheel sensors which plugged straight in to the SE loom.

While Robo was chipping away at the sound deadening stuff I had the fun job of removing the complete wiring loom...it actually comes in 5 sections...
1.Engine loom...this basically unplugs from the computer and dash harness stays with the engine when you pull the engine out.
2.The main front part which includes all the front lighting and A/C runs to the back of the car and connects to the rear light loom.
3.Rear light loom....
4.Dash loom...this stays with the dash.
5.The main power loom which comes from the battery and goes to the main fuse box, alternator and starter motor.

This is parts 2 and 3 of the loom out of the SE...it's pretty big when it's spread out, weighs in at about 9kg.

Now the red car was off to Street Neat Welding in West Gosford for the full roll cage, much easier and less messy when the car is completely pulled apart.

Chapter 4...RIP Titanium SE.

While the Red car was away getting the roll cage done it gave us some to to strip the SE, basically the only thing that was left in it was the fuel tank...everything else came out, we sold off what we did not need and bits ended up all over Australia(thanks to everyone who bought something)...

Every car I have pulled apart I have found something this, car by far had the most bizarre stuff most of which I spoke about in an earlier chapter...did quite well in the change department with a total of about $11.45, most of which was under the carpet...not a bad effort.The best thing I have found was when I pulled apart Matildas silver race car...the guy that owned it must have lived with a cigarette in his mouth, the carpet was a dusty shade of grey from all the ash and the ash try was spotless...I found a bunch of little almost passport sized photos who I assume was the owner of the car...think of Mr. Myagi when he is 80 and about 20kg lighter...have one pinned to my notice board in the garage...he is now the japanese guardian of the garage.

This is a photo of the SE last trip as I wheeled down to the front yard before it was cut in half...

Chapter 5...Caged and ready...

The car came back from Street Neat after about a week with the full cage fitted, everything we need was out of the SE and ready to go in to the new shell, it was time to get some stuff back in...

Started at the front...the ABS controller is different on the later model, the ABS control is integrated in to the main ECU where on the NB8A it has it's own ECU to control the ABS...so the SE controller was fitted, I only had to cut down one of the brake pipes which was a bit long but used all the other pipes, used the clutch system off this car but made a new clutch line so it does not go across the back of the fire wall to the passenger side and then back to the slave...also used the SE booster and master cyl.

Inside we fitted all the SE pedals and steering column, was easier to change the whole column rather than much around swapping over the ignition barrel and so on, from NB8B on all the MX5s came with coded ignition key and immobilizers which were all part of the SE loom so all this was swapped on to this car...the SE ECU won't work without the right ignition key.

Also started fitting the SE intercooler pipes...the hole where the pipe goes through the skirt on the passenger side was already there on the NB8A, amazing how similar the NB8A shell is to the SE shell...99% of the mountings and holes were there so just about eveything we fitted just bolted up.

Chapter 6...Heart Transplant...

Now it was time to get engine/gearbox ready to go in to the car...it still has the complete engine loom connected...for now we are using the stock dump pipe with the cat cut out as you can see in the photo, we just slot the whole thing in with the SE gearbox and dump pipe fitted...all the air can. stuff has been removed but the power steering will be staying( because I'm old and unfit), will be fitting a power steering cooler.

Couple of things that might interest people, this is the sticker thats on the SE gearbox for ID purposes if anyone is ever buying a SE gearbox, pretty much the only way to identify it without pulling apart, also another thing that Mazda have done with the SE is bolt the turbo to the block so it is secure and should not fall off
