I expect it to be the cam angle position sensor. Had the exact same symptoms you describe on a customers 5. Cleared all the fault codes, got it to stall again. Fault code was for the sensor....replaced it...no problems since.
Let me know what you find.
Cheers,
Danny

I got the one for my customers car from MX-5 Plus. Maybe MX-5 Mania might have one. I priced a new one up from Mazda...might have been around the $150 mark.

I'm referring to the cam angle Sensor, not the crank angle sensor. On your model I think it is at the front of your cam cover on the inlet cam side and is retained by a single bolt.
As mentioned, the fault code was for the cam angle sensor. I recommend getting your car on a fault code checker, it saves a lot of guessing. It's quite possible that if you put it on one now, a whole heap of fault codes could be logged. Really needs to be reset, and then have the problem occur with the fault code checker plugged in to be 100% sure. Originally the customers car would do exactly what yours is doing of up to 3 month intervals, however, it probably didn't get out for a few weeks at a time. In the end, I was able to trigger the fault by getting the engine up to temp and then letting it idle. Within 15-20 mins (simulated stop-start traffic....this was when the engine always cut-out) it would do it. If Mania have one, maybe they could lend one to you to trial? Maybe try Boyracer....he always seems to have a few bits and pieces.

wierd as it sounds before you go replacing the cam angle sensor put a cable tie around the plug pulling the two hlafs together tightly and clamping it there. if that dosent work let me know as i have a spare one i can lend you to check if its indeed your problem before you go out lay cash.
i had a problem with my cam angle sensor ages ago and again more recently on a new motor (both NB8A motors). basically it would only occur only when hot but it didnt stall all the time, usually it would just cut power on and off particularly under load (ie on the track). the first time it happened was at wakefield when me and my brother were sharing my car. it would be fine for 4 of my 5 laps then on the last it would start to miss. then my brother would go out for his 5 shortly after and it would start missing after his 2nd lap
he was a tad dissapointed. mania had the car on their dyno for ages trying to find the problem and when we removed the cam angle sensor cleaned it and stuck it back on it seemed to fix the problem... however it returned at the next mx5 track day. i then put a cable tie around the plug as mentioned above and the problem never returned! untill i changed motor
and then at the recent wakefield 300 the problem cam back as this motor didnt have the tie on the sensor.. pitted in once and wiggled the plug and it stalled the motor so i pulled it off bent the pins and pushed it back on hard and that seemed to fix the problem... for afew laps
pitted in and put a cable tie on the plug never had another miss for the remainded of the 130 laps. (lost so much time.. swear we could of came atleast 3rd
)
so yeah this only ever happened when hot.. guess the plug expands and works it way loose car would start and drive fine once left to cool for a moment. try the cable tie then give us a bell and ill lend you a sensor off my other motor, also have a spare set of coil packs you can try too and some standard plugs and leads.. and if that dosnt work i have a huge hammer that helps with stress and may scare the problem away
oh one other thing worth looking at is the crank pulley and crank angle sensor

cable tie fix didnt work, car turned off again, but i have noticed that the black 02 sensor wires were not fixed into the plug, i dont know how long it has been like this, but i am sure this wouldnt be the cause of the car turning off only when hot, i'll have a look around in the engine bay some more once the rain stops.

I've got the same problem - I originally thought it was the chip in the key
Engine just dies and it wont restart until its ready to fire up again
I took it down to Mania and they checked the key sensor and the cam sensor - and it looks like my problem was the cam sensor
Dave lent me a spare cam sensor so I could test it - so I'll have to wait a bit before confirming that was the problem

i'm starting to sway towards my coil pack now, hopefully irwin will lend me both so i can be sure, and find out what it is, its a real pain in the ass!
i left the car runniing for 20 minutes and it would not turn off how inconvienent lol, i was jigling all the wires i could find, unpluged some etc but nothing triggered the same scenario, as irwin was saying with his cam angle sensor, he jiggled it around when hot and it triggered it for him.

yeah i thought of that, but i dont want to wait 2-3 weeks for mazda to have a look and charge me an arm and a leg for something i could already know. However i may give mx5 mania a call tomorrow and see if they have a diagnostic thingy majig

better yet, can anyone confirm if mania have one? if they do i might pop in after work.

OBDII readers can be bought from ebay starting from $30. Perhap's consider it as a long term investment.
