My dream NC build

Postby mx52nv » Sat Dec 06, 2008 11:45 am

I have been thinking about the following for some time now.
It is very much a personal taste and based on my own experience.
Please be gentle and don't just tell me to go buy an Exige S

Here is what I would love to be able to do if funds were available.

Stripped NC - Goal weight 950 kgs (remove everything except dash)
Seam welded & FIA approved 16 point chromolly roll cage (to front strut towers)
2.0 head with 2.5 bottom end
Forged 9.0:1 CR Pistons and Rods
Custom steam pipe exhaust manifold
HKS GT2835 Pro
Custom 50mm Alloy Radiator
Custom Intercooler & piping
3" straight through exhaust with a droopy tip
MoTec M800
SARD 750/850cc injectors.
Malpassi Fuel Pressure Regulator
Bosch 044 In line Fuel Pump
External fuel surge tank
Twin plate clutch (someone has to make one for the NC)
AP Racing 4 piston callipers front on custom brackets
AP Racing 2 piston callipers rear on custom brackets
AP Racing Master brake cylinder & reservoir
AP Racing 310mm slotted & vented disc rotors mounted on custom floating alloy hats
AP Brake Proportioning valve
Steel braided lines
Ohlins DFV Externally Cooled Fully Adjustable Damper & Height Coilovers
Cusco 2 Way Type RS LSD
RP-F1 18x9.5 (offset to clear the brakes)
Kumho 285/30/18 slicks
Carbon Kevlar Sparcos/Recaros (which ever is lighter)
Sparco FIA 6 point harnesses
Fire extinguisher

I'm sure I missed a few things so I'll come back and add or modify things as this thread progresses.
Remember be gentle people, my dream is easily destroyed :)

Hmmm how on earth did I forget the diff
Sheesh. Well again this will be personal taste and experience so I'll say the contenders are Cusco 2 Way Type RS or the Tomei Traxx. However for strictly racing line purposes I think the Cusco RS will pip the Tomei :P

*edit* How did Danny beat me to my post
And yes great minds eh? :P
Oh and just small error but it is Les not Len

Not as many as I would like....most of my parts are series 1 RX-8. So, maybe just on half of the recipe. The series 2 stuff is way out of my reach now that the Yen has strengthened 2-fold on the AUD :x . Will just see how the series 1 equipment performs.

Update!

Looks like someone from the English speaking world (ok I admit it's American English), has done the complete 2.3 engine swap on the big forum 8)

The obvious thing to bear in mind is the left hand drive (U.S.) and right hand drive (Australia) difference between our cars (i.e. steering column, master cylinder, etc).

See thread here -> click me

Really good thread with some decent pictures.

The parts that were carried over from the NC 2.0 LF-VE were:
Fuel Rail
Coil Packs
Intake Manifold
Throttle Body (bigger diameter and plugs are different)
Oil Filter Assembly (from cartridge to spin-on)
Oil Pan
Oil Pickup
Cam Cover (may not be necessary as the OP's donor 2.3 L3-VE engine had a cracked valve cover)
Clutch (may not be necessary as the OP from the big forum was meant to replace this but got the wrong clutch delivered)

Necessary costs (AUD in brackets as at 22/12/08 rates)

Engine = USD$1,600 plus USD$100 core (AUD$2350)
Extra stuff: USD$270 (AUD$400)
Balance Delete Shaft kit = USD$40 (AUD $60)
Labour=?????

Videos of engine running
Clip 1
Clip 2

And a link to NOPRO's 2.3 NC running at Tsukuba from new forum member RE-Xtreme's blog.

I am seriously wondering how much Chris at MX5 Racing sells one of their log-booked NCs for?

That thread makes the swap look so easy.

BEWARE Nightmare introduced.

Sorry to rain on your dream because it is a good one 8) but there isn't a commercially available turbo setup that fits the NC. There just isn't enough room under the bonnet on the exhaust side. There's a trail one in Japan that's fitted behind the rear axel. Yet to see production though.

Why not swap out your turbo dream for the full race 2.3 Cosworth motor or just the Cosworth supercharger?

Never said I was going to use a commercially available turbo kit.

I think my dream set up will have both more horsepower and a broader power band for less money. 400rwhp or 300rwkw shouldn't be a problem (I have a "little" experience). Actually the more I hear the doubters, the more I feel like doing it and stop the BP build going atm...

*SLAP* ......errrm that was my wife objecting

Gotta be a 2.5 lt cosworth.

So far i'd also be sticking on the autoexe body kit.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
