Thinking of doing an early morning GOR run this weekend, would anybody be keen on joining in?

I just remembered there was a tanker explosion at big hill (between fairhaven and lorne).

Hopefully the road wasn't trashed, it was up in the area where the road starts getting interesting about 10km before Lorne. If you pm me your mobile number I'll sms a road condition report on Friday night.

Haven't set any particluar time yet, and I live not too far (Geelong) so I'm easy... whatever suits is fine by me, but preferably before the traffic picks up! 8)

If your mates tag along that would be fantastic! I'm a massive elise fan!

My mates were gonna ride their bikes but dropped out due to a 21st, so at this stage it looks like it'd be more like me tagging along with you guys

From todays Geelong Advertiser

"the speed limit at the crash site had been reduced to 40km/h and would remain that way for several days until the badly burnt road surface was repaired."

Ah damn...

I'm currently in Vic but I'm from SA and I wanted to do a GOR run so bad. Unfortunately left my 5 back in SA.

We tried to hire a car to drive on it... but the only manual car we could get was a Hyundai Getz.

We passed...

For those that are interested, I did the GOR run this morning, so here's an overview:

I left Geelong at about 5.30am, arriving at Fairhaven (where the fun begins  ) at about 6am. From there I had an absolutely fantastic run, all the way to Skenes Creek, and encountered only one other motorist headed in the same direction, a motorbike who pulled over to let me pass as soon as I turned on my headlights. Thankyou! :D

When I reached Skenes Creek, however, it started to spit (very light rain), but I was determined so I continued until the other side of Apollo Bay, but it got worse and the roads were starting to look quite damp, so I turned around to head back.

The rain stopped around Skenes Creek again, and the sun broke through the clouds for a bit, so I progressively pushed towards the limits to test the road surface, eventually getting tire squeak so I was good to go!

Until Lorne I only caught 1 4wd in my direction, who pulled over as soon as he saw me coming, and had another fantastic run. The traffic had started to pick up by now (about 8am) however I still had a clear run through the Lorne-Fairhaven section (one of the best parts IMO  ) And crossed paths with 2 mx-5's, a Green NB & an NC, waves exchanged with both. 8)

After Fairhaven I was caught behind a truck who didn't pull over even at the slow vehicle turnout  before arriving back to Geelong at about 9am.

Overall, had a fantastic run, and couldn't even spot where the truck accident might have happened... they must have done a good job fixing it and quickly too! :D

However on last weekend's run I did it with 32psi in the tires, this time I had 34psi and it was too skittish on some of the uneven roads. I would go back to 32 next time (maybe less) and probably go an extra half-hour earlier (try and arrive in Fairhaven by about 5.30) to have the best possible run. (Maybe tomorrow if I'm keen enough and weather is okay. )

Cheers, Nathan.
