Advice for new turbo setup....

Postby matt9111 » Fri Nov 28, 2008 10:18 am

G'day guys,

I was thinking of going down the custom route for a turbo setup, I want to know everything that will need, i'll post a list of what I need and then I hope some of you can add to it, just incase i've forgoten a few things lol.

Alright here goes,

AVO Turbo Manifold (what flange is the manifold out of interest? T2 or T3)
ATR Highflow T28 ($800)
ECU (What brand should I get?{Assuming around $1000-2000} )
Braided water and oil lines ($250)
Intcooler (Assuming $300)
Custom piping (I'm assuming about $1000)
K&N Pod (Got one)
HKS BOV ($150)
Full custom hi flow exhaust ($1500)

So how much have I forgotten, I want 150rwkw+, will the standard injectors, fuel pump, and AFM be up to it?
I was interested in the Tighe 805 Camshafts aswell.

Now I have done a few turbos/exhausts on 180's (Like 5 lol, so not that many), but im pretty sure I can do most of the work myself. It's just the ECU and the oil/water lines I think i'll nee help with, any estimates on cost there?

Cheers guys

Hopefully there aren't to many of these threads lol :)

The AVO Manifold is for a GT28 (currently, I don't know about past). Also, pump and injectors are a must IMO and at about $400-$500 are pretty reasonable.
There's plenty of ECU's available and they all pretty much do the same thing (I know that's a broad statement, please don't flame). Make a decision on which ECU you want based on who you want to tune it. That's the reason I didn't get the MSPNP, I'd heard and read great things about it, but I couldn't find anyone who could or was willing to tune it.

What I can say is apparently good luck in getting it engineered and registered in Victoria.

From a few here who have tried it is easier, cheaper and less painful to shove old $50 notes up your nose with a toilet brush.

But good luck. :)

Actually all the AVO manifolds are for the T25 based flange (think small Garrett/Nissan turbos like that off the S13/14/15 Silvias).

As for your power figure, it really depends how your car will do on the dyno with the stock fuelling system. I would personally budget injectors and at least a fuel pressure regulator if you are not getting a better/upgraded fuel pump.

As for the rest, CAMS are not really worth the effort for a turbo MX5 IMHO. Too little gains for the effort and money. d-mag's statement about choosing your tuner before your ECU is one I firmly agree with. As long as he or she can show you other cars done, back it up and guarantee the work, go for it.

You are also missing the labour and dynotuning components (I am not sure if you were performing the work yourself).

And of course, there are all the usual things that you will have to budget for down the track such as a clutch, diff, gearbox, brakes, tyres, etc. Any component that will be strained will eventually not be up to scratch or worst case will just give way (generalisation but mostly based on your driving style and my experience in building turbo MX5s).

Have fun - the journey can be a pain but the rewards are great!

Cheers for all the advice guys!

Most of the work will be done by me, I just need someone to run the water and oil lines, i'm not phased by engineering it, the moment the car is defected i'll never put it back on the road.

Can anyone recommend a tuner in victoria for the ecu?

An Exedy button clutch and lightwieght flywheel are going in the moment my mechanic is back from his christmas holiday, I was thinking of going the DBA Slotted Rotors, It thought the diff and gearbox we're good for around 200rwkw in the NB8B?

Cheers guys

matt9111,

I'm not confident about two things you mention.

An Exedy button clutch and lightweight flywheel are going in...
1) The Exedy (insert type) clutch. Does not matter what it is, it will not be good enough IMHO. May last longer than a standard one but will still wear out in a relatively similar time frame. Of course, your driving style will also effect the reliability of the clutch but as far as I am concerned - go for a twin plate clutch (OS Giken) right now and you will never regret it. It may be a lot more expensive but when you have been through every type of clutch there is from the Exedy range, you might have a similar view

...the diff and gearbox were good for around 200rwkw in the NB8B?
2) The diff and gearbox lasting will mostly depend on your driving style and type of driving you do (i.e. any motorsports or track days). There is no sure thing for the drivetrain side of things when dealing with MX5s with more power. A gentle right foot applied linearly will always be the best bet for drivetrain health 8)

The upgrade to DBA slotted rotors will help but also make sure you have good pads to work with the type of driving you do. I am sure there are threads on brake pads so a quick search will help there.

Oh and lastly, Tyrone aka DriftFury used to be a very knowledgeable person in tuning but he seems to have disappeared :frown:

I am sure Melbourne forum members will chime in here to recommend a tuner or tuners for turbo MX5s. With the larger population, there must be lots of turbo MX5s running around (even if there are draconian laws) 8)

150rwkw is not achievable with the stock afm (no matter what anyone tells you)
You will need a programable ecu for those power levels.
Bank on 460cc injectors too if you are not using an afpr.

But those power goals on a t25 are a snack. You will need a decent intercooler for it though as you will be boosting aroung 14psi depending on the dump pipe.

a T28 should get you to 150 (depending on trim) around 12 psi.
Huh?

Good call ampz - I missed that bit about using the stock AFM

Definitely get rid of it and go to MAP sensor (this will mean a more expensive standalone ECU).

Thanks again,

I was thinking a decent ECU would come with a MAP sensor, I know a guy who tunes 180's, does it depend on the car on how well someone can tune it or if they know the ECU?

I tried searching for the OS Giken twin plate clutch, but there's none for the NB8B.

The car will (eventually) be track only.
I know absolutely nothing about the gearbox and Diff in terms of upgrading it, do you have any idea of my options?

As for the brakes I was thinking either Hawk Blues or EBC Yellow or Reds.

I will probably go with the 460cc injectors, and also a bosch 040 fuel pump.

Cheers Matty.

Being able to read a MAP sensor depends on the ECU. Most popular ones have the input for the signal on the ECU (i.e. Autronics, MoTec, Wolf, etc). However, check before you purchase as you will be deciding on your dynotuner before you choose the ECU.

As for the clutch, could someone who has experience with NB8B clutches please chime in here as to whether there is any difference between them and the 1.8 BP clutches from an NA8? I do not think there was any difference and thus any 1.8 BP clutch would fit.

If this is the case, then the TS2B listing for the BP twin plate (204mm clutch disk diameter) on the OS Giken site is the right one

The diff upgrade is a matter of opinion. Most people break the crown (ring gear) and (input) pinion not the actuall diff centre. Assuming you are referring to actually breaking the diff centre, has anyone broke a Guru diff yet? If not then that is an option for you.

Quaife make a 5 speed transmission for the MX5. Mega bucks though
However, I have been in contact with Time Attack Matt over in the U.S. and he swears by it 8)

If it is going to be a track car only, then I am sure any of the motorsport experts on our forum can give you further insight based on their experience and value for money.

Everything else mentioned sounds good 8)

Okay this sounds crazy.....

But im thinking of driving to Sydney to get the Adaptronic ECU fitted and tuned by MX5 Mania. Are these a good ECU? Do they have a MAP sensor? Should I look at other options?

I think the big h.p is good for track use, but mx5's are good for carrying speed thru corners. Try getting a basic setup with a stand alone computer, and look into the car as a whole package- suspension, brakes ---driver.......... And see how it goes.

You can always spend more later once you have an idea of how to get the most out of it around a track. Mine has 132rwkw's and i go past cars like skylines with well over 200kw's. The purple skyline on the weekend had 330rwkw's and i was just faster than him. Get decent brakes it makes a big difference. In saying that i might be looking into boosting mine to 150rwkw's. Just to see if it makes much difference. I will let u know next sunday.

Edit- Try avo in cheltenham for ur tune/set-up, moorabin airport.

I pretty much agree with everything said however my avo manifold has a T28 sitting on it. Are they selling a new one or have they managed to fit the T28 onto T25 flange or is there something I don't know :?: . Thanks for the advice on the OS Giken. I'm going to look into that as my clutch is due for a change.

As for the OP's original question you can definately look into AVO. They use the Link computer. I haven't got one but everything they have done on my car so far has been brilliant. Good luck
