Lowering the plug temperature can make a big difference to the combustion temperature which may help you run some more timing or reduce pinging.
I cant remember the full number but with NGK Mazda recommends a 5 or 6 plug for the stock cars, my SP goes best with a 7 plug, but I've heard of people using an 8 with no problems. With Nipondenso plugs the numbering is reversed ie the smaller the number the colder the plug. However if you go to cold you run the risk of plug fowling in stop start driving.
