re: tyre wear rating

Tread wear rating

Tyre models that are marketed in the US have to have a tread wear rating as part of the Uniform Tyre Quality Grading System (UTQG) operated by the US government National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Under the system, a tyre’s tread wear is measured under controlled conditions involving an 11,500 km drive on a specified test course, and compared to a ‘standard’ tyre with a rating of 100.

A rating of 200 indicates that the tested tyre should last twice as long as the standard model. So the higher the number, the longer you can expect a tyre to last.

However, the rating is comparative only, and not all tyres carry it. Real-life wear of a tyre depends on a number of aspects, such as the road surface, tyre pressure, wheel alignment and driving style.

Also part of the UTQG, and printed on the tyre sidewall next to the tread wear rating, are:

* A traction rating that grades the tyre’s wet braking traction (AA, A, B or C, with AA being best).
* A temperature rating, which indicates a tyre’s ability to dissipate heat (A, B, C, with A being best).

i guess a brief summary in our context is that they are tested under standerdised conditions, and as such measured under controlled conditions. BD and Ben's driving styles might be very different, and also teh driving surfaces might be different, so it is i guess the most objective way of measuring wear on tyres. I would be inclined to believe the tyre wear rating.

oh ok. It looks pretty much like a street tyre.

i thought they were uber hardcore and you couldn't drive them in the rain.

they are a street tyre and apparently they are quite good in the rain. would love to see some track times compared to the 888.

I don't think they are great in standing water dispersion (aquaplaning) resistance, but they stick brilliantly on damp surfaces - probably be a good choice for the track in damp weather but not full on rain (although they would probably be better than most semis in those situations). As I said, I need to do some comparison work to accurately rate them for you, and Stan theMan has kindly volunteered to assist in the process... all we have to do is find the time 8)

Eastern Creek Historics this weekend STM - we can do a test run via G Park SS to the circuit! 20 Formula 5000s running in their own races is the best thing to watch this weekend. I'm heading there both days - let me know if you're up for it.

lets swap wheels at my place then drive down and swap back at the circuit or in the carpark at the Shell outside the circuit (so we can get some solid flat ground). Which day suits?

I can officially say these things are fantastic. Sat morning wet road hard launch (2kmh rolling start then nailed throttle thru 1st, 2nd & 3rd) - no wheelspin! Dry cornering on Brabham Drive heading to Eastern Creek - roundabout entered at 60kmh and accelerated through in single lane! No movement at all. Best road tyres I've dríven on.

hmm...sounds excellent. I guess my only concern now is the tyre wear =].

Wun, did you say bridgestone are releasing another high performance tyre?
