Changing Instrumentation light colour on NB30P3

Postby crzymx » Fri Nov 07, 2008 10:58 pm

Yeah i saw those. Im a few steps away from buying those refractor LED's from ebay. However im just scared that they will not work as i have already had powerfull led's and they didnt work, let alone produce hotspots, something im not worried about. Im saying this because another forumite had purchased similar globes to me (cluster of 3 led's, i bought a cluster of 4) and he produced outstanding results (refer to mxhevn's picture) where as i had an led with more power and my dash was dim. So for some reason im doubting its the led...

took my car to an auto electrician to replace blown bulbs in the dash.
He removed the shrowd under the steering column and then removed the cowel over the display by just pushing down on the forward part and pulling off.
He said this was the trickiest part as the plastic lugs that hold the cowl to the rest of the dash can become brittle with age and snap.
The whole exercise including replacing all the bulbs took about 20 minutes and he charged me $30.
He knew what he was doing

To be completely honest i think you got ripped off. You could have done it yourself in under ten minutes and just payed for the bulbs. All you need to do is pull the little cover off the top of the steering column. Then pull forward on the part of the dash that surrounds the instrument cluster. It pops off with a bit of coaxing and then your left with the cluster to unscrew and replace the blown bulbs. Easy!

What led's did you use? And what result did you get.

Also what model 5 do you have?

Oh yeah ive been emailing the guy who sells, we came to a conclusion if they didnt work i could send em back. I dont doubt that they dont work, but i think its the green gel on the back of the dials that stops the blue from coming through. Anyone used these l.e.d's on an 8A?? If so how did you find the brightness with the green gel? Any sanding required.. *hint hint tutorial*

Well here is the outcome of my purchase on ebay.

These are the 6 led wedge bulbs and they completely surprised me!

so crzymx, did you have to remove the green filter for the blue to shine through?

No, read back a bit and you should see the bit about what globes i used. After testing a few different globes i found the only significant effect was if you use multi-directional led globes that you can find on ebay. You will find that changing the sleeves gives you little colour change, and using blue flood globes leaves dull spots.

Just did this to mine, seems to be a little dim... mostly around the oil and fuel gauges. Kinda annoying, but I can't fiddle with it till tomorrow. Are 4 bulbs enough to make it light up the whole panel?
