What are the best tyres for my NA Clubby

Postby The Green » Mon Nov 03, 2008 10:36 pm

I am in the market for a set of new tyres for my clubby.
I am just putting the feelers out there on what peoples thoughts are on some of the best tyres you can buy.
Any info regarding size, price, pro/con of a set of tyres for my stock 14s would be great
Cheers The Green

The better option is to figure out what you want from a tyre. Then we can suggest.
if you are trying to figure out what tyre fits your driving you are better off pressing the search function.

I want the best sticky tyre as mx5 are made to stick to the apex of the corner thus requiring i guess you could say road legal track tyres as i will be taking the 5 on race days and would prefer not changing tyres.

I dont mind replacing my tyres when i need to (every 6-18months) as long as the ware is not unreasonable then again it also depends on how many track days i go on.

At the end of the day i want the best tyres in regards to sticking to the road. i understand soft tyres ware quicker but at the end of the day as long as i get a good drive out of them i dont really care how often i need to replace them.

budget?

given your willing to change every 6 months I guess your not worried about compromises in which case semi slicks would be the way to go

My budget is what ever is the best at the moment. The mx5 is new to me and i want to learn how to drive it to the best of my ability in the safest conditions so i understand that the tyers i am after are going to cost me like $300per corner.

That being said i am not made of money but when it comes to safety... How much is your life???

I need the tyers to be just as good in the wet as in the dry with in reason as i understand having good wet tyres can affect the quality of stick on a dry road.

Apparently Bridgestone is making their RE001 Adrenalin in 14" sizes, if so, go for those as they are awesome road tyres that can withstand alot of track abuse. But then again, if they are made in Australia, then there may be a compromise in quality. Read Charlie Brown's RE001 vs PP2 thread.
I've been using the superseded Grid III in 185/60 R14 size until very recently and what a great tyre that is on the road and they don't falter on the track.

Road-going Falkens cannot withstand track abuse, so forget about them. I think they are bringing out a new semi-slick design, so maybe they would be selling their current RT615 cheaper.

Kumho has a new semi-slick that has had some great praise, Ecsta XS, but not sure if they have a 14" size. Pricing for the 15" is around $180. I want to try those next.

I've never been a fan of Goodyears, and stay clear away from Firestone.

QFT

Tyres are the single most important thing for my MX5.

Dunlop DZ03G or Bridgestone RE55s semi-slick tyres are the ones I have tried and recommend.
Others on here have had success with some other brands as well.
However, I did not think much of any of the Falkens.

Budget around $300 per tyre plus balancing & fitting and of course a complete wheel alignment if not already done.

Either way semi-slicks will last 5,000kms or general driving with a monthly Autokhana day.
Much much less if you are doing circuit track days or circuit racing in general.
Repeated laps will be the quickest way to finish them off.
Remember to scrub them in and you should be pretty happy with the traction provided by semi-slick tyes.

I've got Toyo R888 on mine and am very happy with them. Cost me $240 a corner for 205/50 15 so you should be able to get 14's for well under your budget if they make them in your size.

give doug an email at queensland raceway to talk about the dunlops

sales@queenslandraceway.com.au

with the dunlops you get a free scrub in session on the track and tyre management programme/flipping rotating for the life of the tyre. when my DO1J's run out on the next track day I will be getting DZ03G's from him. I got a quote for 205/50/15 at 330 a corner. not bad considering you get about half a track day out of it too.

I'm using Michelin PP2 on NB8A rims, but previously used Bridgestone Potenza GIII on NA8 rims - happy with both on road, but didn't use either on track.

If you're in the market for tyres, & you're going to do track days, then it might be worth considering NB8A 15x6 rims - so you plus 1 from 185x60x14 to 195x50x15.

Going by the following thread, a 205x50x15 Toyo R888 would need a rim wider than the NB8A.

Awesome set of tyres and can't really fault them. Great in the wet too.
