ticking noise on startup now..

Postby Dweezle » Fri Oct 17, 2008 11:23 am

HI all, the last 2 weeks i have noticed on startup, the engine TICKS for a few seconds then goes away. Doesnt sound like a good thing to me, Could this be an oil related problem, or much worse? i am running Magantec but its due for a change, doing that today.
Just thought i might ask and see if anyone has an idea on what it is.

It's just lifter noise, ie friction between the valve actuators and camshafts. Nothing to worry about as you mentioned it goes away after a minute or so.
It makes this noise on startup because the oil hasn't had time to lubricate it properly.

Keep using Magnatec, it's good stuff.
I've used most of the major brands and I like Castrol almost solely for the fact that their lubricants reduce lifter noise/time most significantly. The only big brand I haven't tried is Mobil.
I chuck in some additives from Nulon, Lucas, and Wynn's but some people reckon its a waste of money.

FANTASTIC :D :D :D :D
SO HAPPY... just changed oil, and oil filter.. first start had noise.. buts thats to be expected.. then after the filter filled quiet as a mouse..
multiple starts afterwards same thing.. no tick tick tick.

THANKS GUYS.. i was freakin for a lil bit just quietly

i think it might have been the oil filter, it wasnt a mazda one, is it possible some aftermarket ones let the oil drain back to the pan?

yep..... I find, its time to change oil when the lifters start making noise on start up. Its usually about 5k km for me.

Sometimes a bit of engine oil flush before the oil change helps quieten things down a bit too. On my NA I knew when it was getting time for an oil change without even looking at the odo because the lifters would start making noise.

I'm pretty sure that repco oil filters allow oil to leave the head.....and Mazda ones don't, hence the no ticking on startup. I use castrol aswell, :)

Thats interesting, does anyone know the price difference between mazda and repco filters?
