inlet filters systems
Hi Guys,
I need advice on what if any air inlet system I should put on my 2002 mx5.
I have a leaning towards the K&N as I have had them on other cars.
Do they give a HP. boost and what is the noise level like.
I don't want a lot on induction whooshing noise . Can you please advise. Thanks Nick
PS. Should I be doing this to a limited edition and will it drop it's value?

The K&N Typhoon Intake Kit has an intake pipe, pod air filter and/or airbox and also has a dynograph proving a horsepower increase. Here is the Typhoon kit's dynograph -> clicky.
There are 3 different bolt-on options from K&N for your model MX5:
Part no./Kit name
1) 69-6000TP K&N Typhoon kit (as above has polished or other coloured intake pipe, pod air filter & removes airbox).
2) 57-0559 K&N 57i kit (Bolts straight onto your AFM, has a duct for cool air from below & removes your airbox).
3) 33-2676 K&N Replacement Panel filter (fits in standard airbox).
Having said that, here are some interesting results from the Autosalon test on most of the airfilters available in the market -> clicky
However, if you do not want a "whoosing" sound then you are not really going to be able to do anything else other than a K&N panel filter inside your factory airbox.
Lastly, except in the case of the replacement panel filter, as long as you keep any factory bits that you remove, I would not worry about losing value on your LE.
Hope this helps

while we are on this topic I noticed that alot of people on the Big Forum just open up (hack away) the stock air box before the filter and remove the snorkel
Anyone here tried that?
Does it work?

Thanks for the "heads up" Mx52 nv. I will start out looking at K&N and the nasty yellow ended racing job. any ideas as to the best place to buy . I know mx5 parts UK have the typhoon setup for sale . can the Aussie shops compete?
I will hold off till I can have a ride in a car so fitted to hear first hand "The sound effects"

Actually they come in other colours and trims.
I have the red pod filter with "carbon" (LOL) top on my car at the moment.
Will post a pic up when I get a chance
I wonder if it is worth doing a group buy ...

i have the red on red 3A racing filter. no problems at all.
i think the k&n typhoon is fairly expensive. u can get cheap knock offs for less than half the price. and change the pod filter and you're laughing.

Hmm, dyno runs done 3 seconds apart. Impressive. In which time, the temperature went up 9 degrees.
Convenient that they show the point of maximum difference (wow, 3.5 hp!!!!111), not the change in peak power. Most of which can be accounted for by the SAE correction factor...

presuming you're getting the intake from mania, $405 for maximum 2kw gain, that's $202.50 per kilowatt

If you don't want loud induction sounds, stick with a stock intake, don't bother replacing it.
And even if you get a K&N panel filter replacement, worth ~$100, you won't gain much anyway.
1kw at the most, in the real world, you probably wouldn't even notice it.
Intake on an mx5 is mainly for sound.IMO

I like the concept of the SP Motorsports system, it's a real cold air intake and it's legal as it's in an enclosed airbox.
The cost however is a tad eyebrow raising however!

i've noticed a more responsive throttle with a k&n "style" intake..
since then i've changed to the short cold side intake. i purchased this one from chris from mx5racing (thanks mate). it works a treat. it is even more responsive than the typhoon style intake but you can feel the car lacks a bit of torque bottom end.

Nice intake sliq.
Apart from sound, you will have a more responsive feel from the engine, which is good.
Sliq, did you have to extend/solder the wires or anything, or are the standard wires long enough to go from the right side to the left side.

thanks philz

the electrical wires didn't require any extensions/soldering.. however the vacuum hose required an extension.
