indeed, after giving me prices for those 3 tyres, i asked what other options are there n he said nah those are pretty much it

completely disregarding the likes of michelin, toyo, yokohama, etc

I got some Maxxis MA-V1 tyres 195/50/15 on my Honda Jazz VTIS a couple of months ago. $115 per tyre fitted at Bob Janes. These are a seriously good street tyre for the money, and will consider a set for the 5 when the time comes. Great grip dry and wet, very quiet, and give a very comfortable ride quality. The tread pattern looks quite good as well.

Just make sure the week of manufacture of the Yoko A539 is less than 5 years old. This information is on the tyre's sidewall. But for $219, there are better tyres out there.

What he said. C-Drives are considered "comfort oriented" by Yokohama. S-Drives and A-Drive R1s are the performance tyres of the range.

As Boags'MX5, I highly recommend the Bridgestone RE001, especially the "Made in Japan" ones. The dry grip is awesome for a street tyre. The wet grip is decent enough. I've tested them on Eastern Creek , Oran Park and mountain runs, both wet and dry. Very impressive in the dry.

Speak to Kerry or Graeme at Bridgestone Bentley (Tel: 9458 4586) about some Adrenalins RE001s. Tell them Les sent you. I guarantee you won't be disappointed with both the performance of the tyres or their knowledge. You might catch a glimpse of Kerry's race car or any of the race cars they set up which would be reason enough to drop by....

Current Club Prez of WA and many of the club cars have been set up by Kerry Wade. Real unassuming guy but hugely talented driver. He personally spent a lot of time getting the MX5s to handle right over the last few years (mine included).

I have gone for the lighter rims and the RE001's in the 205x45 size

Tyres are $220 each. I didn't shop around as I was short on time. It seems the cheapest people can get are around $199. ~$80 loss isn't too bad for the amount of time involved

anywho for the above - instead of getting good tyres i fell for this set of black starcorps with what turned out to be pretty awful rubber on em:

also, just got an alignment at bridgestone bentley to the "spirited driving" specs in charlie brown's alignment thread. Also, tyres are at 36psi all round

Tonight was the first time i drove in the wet and deary me these tyres are bad - very easy to get the tail out (..dangerously fun, ill admit) and just as easy to lose front end grip at reasonably low speeds round tight bits like roundabouts

in the dry they are alright, of course im coming off a set of mismatched tyres (3 diff tread patterns) incl bald rears - the Firenza's are of course just cheap budget tyres, albeit Japanese, they perform terribly. but alright for normal driving in the dry.. but not so much in the wet if you're not awake

Definately do not recommend anyone purchase these. can't wait till ive taken care of other things financially so i can slap on some proper rubber.. for now im going to just experiment with pressures see if it makes any difference

Size - 185/60/14
Price - 3/5 $225/tyre Good value for what you get but double the price of 14 road tyre. The added safety is worth it, stop and turn in a heartbeat, can dodge everything except baby kangaroos.
Dry grip - 5/5 Insane, very predictable. I have utter confidence that I can go through any corner at any speed I feel like. They can hold up 12psi boost off the line in first gear without slipping (4.3diff too), no wander they use them for drags.
Wet grip - 4/5 Fantastic, these things grip harder bald in the wet than bridgestone GIII's, very impressed, I feel confident going fast even in the wet despite what I've heard about other tyres.
Tyre life - 2/5 They lasted one year, or 8000kms but including 3 track days, although the spin at 180km at EC is what killed them, on the street they don't wear.
Road noise - 1/5 It hums noticably on smooth roads, doesn't bother me, just accelerate out of its resonant speed and the noise disappears.

Additional point, they look awesome, hardcore look with hardly any grooves, awesome tread pattern.

Highly recommended as tyre upgrade even if you don't track, they just don't make this amount of grip in small street tyres.

has anyone here used Maxxis MA-V's? my local bob jane bloke said they are excellent value, but after reading a few reviews, they have a helluva road noise

i've had a look at the maxxis victras and they are great tyres but overkill for what i'm after - they are a notch below the RE001's.

i'm looking for something about mid street performance - in 205/45/16.

i've also been eyeing yokohama c drives - they are a good bet.

any suggestions?
