My gear box is snicking teeth moving from 1st. to 2 nd gear.
Have changed gear oil and added nulon. No change .Car done 87.000 kms 2002 NB LE
Changes OK if done slowly. Anyone any ideas?

shagged synchros most likely.
Try Redline oil (everyone raves about it)
I'm running 1/2 Castrol synthetic g'box oil, 1/2 Castrol Dex-3 ATF to try to fix the same problem. Seems to work OK but I haven't tried much else...
Could also be the hydraulics (slave or master cylinder) failing, but that would affect all gears.

lol still worth checking the clutch hydraulics first. Although I agree it usually affects all gears, sometimes- it doesnt. I recently had a problem selecting 1st and second in the wife's car. Turned out to be clutch slave in the earliest stage of going awol. no visible leaks, no noticeable reservoir loss, but a slight weep ( all the leaked fluid- maybe 1/2 teaspoon full) was contained in the slave boot. Was just enough to reduce the actuating rod travel to make the low gears hard to select without grating. ( these spin faster than the higher gears, I presume).New slave fixed problem. Hope yours is as easy. I only investigated the slave in desperation after deciding the synchro was shot and the gearbox had to come out.

Hi all,
I get a similar thing on my NB8A:
when it's cold in the morning, sometimes the teeth will grate when 1->2 even when i have the clutch 100% depressed.
seems to work find when warmed up.
apparently the slave was replaced 2 years ago... how often do these things go bad?

Nick and Insurgence- the old cold snick is normal and perfection betwixt 1 and 2 at any time is not always achievable. It is a matter of degree. There are a number of threads about Redline though it is certainly not mandatory to use this oil- if the irritation is too great it might help. Keith's advice describes what is a common problem and worth keeping an eye on.
