One annoying rattle after the other!!!

Postby CheyneX5 » Fri Sep 19, 2008 6:16 pm

i have been noticing this very annoying rattle in my NA6 recently, it usually happens when i go over an uneven road with fine bumps or a dirt road.

Sounds like?.... it sounds like there is a wrench rattling around inside my spare wheel and when i occasionaly go around a corner quick it sounds like it is sliding along under the parcel shelf.

i stripped the boot of all the carpet and spare wheel and everything but could not find this problem, even drove the car around and could still hear it. put everything back in and tightened spare wheel.

could there be any loose parts under or inside the parcel shelf or has anyone come accross this before?

regards,

cheyne

if you've been working on your car recently... is there any chance you have left a tool somewhere?

a mechanic left a spanner in the windscreen cowl of my car once. whenever i went around a corner there was a cccrrrrrrrsssshhhh CLUNK sound. another time, a mechanice (no , not the same one) replaced my plug leads.... but left the old ones draped over the radiator. the flopped around a bit and made some clanking noises. another time, at a dodgy day... one of the attendees who shall remain nameless *cough mekros cough* ... left a screwdriver behind my headlights. wheneever i raised or lowered the headlights there was a very loud grinding noise. the screwdriver was bent in half after that... luckilly it wasn't mine (but poor old meanmx is now short one screwdriver  )

so yeah.... sound like a good place to start. retrace your steps.

as far as i know the only thing that was done was having a new soft top fitted at mx5 factory. could that have something to do with it?

well the soft top is on the parcel shelf, right?!? and that is where the noise is coming from . .

note my mention of 2 different proffesional mechanics leaving bits lying around in my car??

you should have clear access to most of the obvious areas to check for loose bits. altho there is a cover plate in the boot on the left, to protect the fuel filler lines. maybe there is something rolling around in there... i think it's only a few nuts to to undo to remove it and have a look.

Considering the fact that you have to remove about 10 nuts to get the softtop off and it is in that area it is very likely to be a loose nut rolling around. Have a look and get one of them extendable magnets and have fun fishing

I've had the same one for about a year - ever since I put in a new soft top in fact. One day I'll take a passenger with a stethoscope or an ear trumpet for a ride along a bumpy road and finally nail it. I figure it's in the way the new top was adjusted.

Could be leftover rivets if they drilled out the old ones or maybe a nut they couldn't be bothered retrieving. Check under the parcel shelf carpet. When you take the carpet off, check the left and right side behind the seatbelts(you can also check if all the nuts are on). These are the drain holes for runoff from the softtop(you might be able to see without taking the carpet off, I can't remember). They are plastic and sit under the ends of the rain rail. I dropped a nut and it got caught between the plastic drain and the metal of the parcel shelf. Yes I still have 2 for those who read that wrong
