ahh if your looking to buy... why don't you just hunt for a 5 thats the right colour in the first place?
Regardless I forget how much I was quoted but it was in the 3-5k Mark. Depending on colour, finish and process. Sand blasting the previous colour off, priming and respraying then a full detail will cost you the most. Just a simple spray over the top after a top coat will cost you in the lower end of the range but alot of the time looks crap.

I Purchased a silver 89 mx5 in november and wrote it off 2 months back so been looking for a new one. Have seen a nice orange one on car sales but its in queensland and has 170k so i was thinking of buying a white or red one and getting it resprayed. I miss my old car

it can be a fair bit cheaper if you do the prep work yourself.
strip the paint & prime the surface.

just the outside will probably be 3-4K
If you want to fully strip the interior, engine bay etc it's more like 10K...
just buy one in the colour you want.

Yep $10k for a complete strip down and respray inside out.
As long as the colour you are after is a factory colour, then as everyone advices, just get the car in the right colour.

How much do you want to change the colour by?
by a car thats atleast in the same colour range because it will be better long term if you decide not to paint in the rarely seen areas
Mne cost 5g and it was a roller any further and it would of been on a rotisserie!
I' did all the prep work though and I even painted some of it, (like the engine bay)
I did a full colour change with a purple pearlesent over the top
probably the most expensive way to do it!
if its a white car just do a factory nissan white pearl over the top
if its red maybe the SE velocity red colour
blue - winning blue(nother mazda colour)
that way atleast if you change the colour of the outside when you lift the bonnet its not so much of a different colour
(nothing worse than explaining to some one why your engine bay is different colour to your car)
Unless you drive a 200sx where every coloured car except white has a black engine bay!
btw fwiw painting the engine bay in a 5 is not that hard you just have to string up the left and right side wiring harness's in the booth everything else unbolts easily
definatly paint the insides of the doors and jambs too it might be the little bit extra but its worth it
if your looking at a freshen up in the same colour expect to pay 1000-2000
changing the colour slightly but not doing under the bonnet and jambs factor about 3000
after that its a case of how long is a piece of string
and FWIW i only ever went in the get a bumper sprayed and came out with something totally different!
