Was going to (but I got confused and tried a face-saving exit), the engine was a B6 8 valve SOHC, I somehow managed to assumed it was a 16 valve turbo , I'm such a bloody idiot. I'm still looking for a gasket set, been sending emails and getting none back, so if anyone can give me some pointers....
Also looking for low-compression pistons.

Update: Removed and straightened steering rack, removed radiator, drained tank and relieved fuel pressure, disconnected the clutch and shifter, removed exhaust, removed intake, disconnected starter, ignition etc. and pulled out the engine and gearbox.
A very tedious process, thanks Claire for helping.

Anyway here is a quick update:
I put a coat of black on the body (still rough) and degreased the engine and gearbox (note absence of clutch and flywheel).
Did some work on the bonnet but didn't want to post up pictures taken with my phone, as you can tell the quality is less that great.

Update:
Some more airbrushing with a little more detail, camera flash makes a mess of the shots but otherwise it's blurry as all hell.

Another fan of theme cars!
Update: Bonnet finished. Lots of stuff getting stuck in the clear, most of the problems resolved and I'm reasonably happy with the final product.

Well, it's been awhile, I left the project to rot in my shed due to the pain of organising a new shed, building a decent booth (still not completed) and lack of funds.
But here is the long and short of the last few months:
I ripped the engine apart for inspection and found dirty great hole in the block, so I decided to change plans. Seeing as I have a V8 for a daily and enjoy the noise (ƒü¢k the torque, noise is the thing a V8 does best), I have decided to go the 1uzfe route. This of course means stripping the engine-bay, bracing the chassis, replacing the differential - but I have plenty of time.
At present the Mx5 is on the lawn, stripped as far down as possible and waiting for me to build a rotisserie so as to weld a brace for the mid-section and remove the rust ( ) from the rear of the car.
