3rd crunch!

Postby Moto » Wed Sep 03, 2008 4:14 pm

Hey guys I have a NB8A with 25,000k's on the clock!

The other day I was changing from 2nd to 3rd at high RPM (somewhere above 6k) and cruched the sh*t out of 3rd! I cringed, put It down to bad driving, and didnt think anything more of it.

Except....it happend twice yesterday! Now i'm seriously paranoid about revving out 2nd.

Any idea's on what it could be? fudged syncro, tired clutch, shitty gearbox oil, or just plain shithouse driving? I drive the car pretty hard and it's never happend before...

I'd agree with checking the clutch slave (followed by the master)
I'd guess that 3rd crunches worse because it's only a single synchro, 1st and 2nd have double cones.
(But mine crunches 2nd usually...)

Good idea, I'v noticed the clutch feeling a bit odd lately and sometimes it will do a small clunk when putting it into first.

Sounds like your clutch is not releasing fully.
Follow the other guys' advice and check out the slave and master cylinder.

3rd crunch!

Similar recently happened to my wife's car ( 88 Nissan Patrol): it crunched going into gear and was sometimes hard to select 1st or 2nd. There was no noticeable fluid loss, but I pulled the slave cyl out and checked it and the seal was weeping just enough to stop it moving sufficient distance to fully actuate the clutch. I replaced the slave and the problem went away.
