Engine oil for track days

Postby emexv » Tue Sep 02, 2008 6:18 pm

I recently put Penrite 10W-50 Semi synthetic in my NA(180,000kms). On the bottle it says good for all uses where 10W-30.40 & 50 are stipulated. I don't drive it much and when I started it on the weekend the engine top end was very noisy. This went away after some driving but it was the first time it has done it since owning the car.

The placard on the car leaves alot up to interpretation but I am thinking that this oil might be a bit heavy. I know this is not a simple question to answer but would like to know what others think.
Cheers
Mark

Try Mobil 1 10W-30. This oil is thin like water. And will easily withstand a track day.

10W-50 is probably too thick at startup.

I have been told good things about Castrol Edge. Might give it a go.

Best Oil I've found so far for the track is actually Penrite Sin10. It's a 10W-60 oil but it actually lasts between changes. The Royal Purple I used started being consumed. My motors only got 50,000km's on it as well and I've yet to see a hint of oil smoke. I usually change mine about every 5-6km's at the most.

Mark my NA6 has similar klms to yours. have tried the following

Shell Helix 15-40 was in car when purchased did not last on the track causing noisy tappets 9couple track days)
Castrol Magnatec 10-40 did not last on the track causing noisy tappets (couple track days)
Mobil 1 Good no tappet noise and lasted on track
Castrol Edge similar experience to Mobil 1 and cheaper

I've had good experience with Castrol Edge 5W-30 on the track car over the past 2 years, it seems to hold together well for 3 months/3 meetings, then I change it. But I've got a bottle of Mobil 1 5W-50 in the shed for the next change. The car takes such a hammering that I feel a more solid oil when hot might be a better idea still

If it is 'rattling' every time you start it I'd be worried, but if it was only once on startup after the change, I would put it down to priming the system. Penrite is great oil and good value for money, and you are running the correct grade, so it should be fine.

Well I thought I would go with the Castrol Edghe and see how it goes. Firstly....what a stupid place for an oil filter  . Made for very skinny people with little hands.

I haven't gone on much of a drive but the first thing I noticed is the increase in oil pressure. I did think it was a bit low before but didn't trust the guage too much. The pressure is higher now than it's ever been. Will be interesting to see how it goes when it gets hot and has a bit of a work out.

castrol edge 5-30w seems to go through my car like petrol, whereas 10-60w lasts a while longer, also ran smoother.each engines different in the end.
