Bright Blue LED Light on RHS of Dash

Postby 2000ClassicRed » Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:31 pm

Please be nice to me as I am new here.

Only had my May 2000 MX5 for a week (my first MX5).

I have a Blue LED light on all the time whether running or not. It is on the dash near the drivers side door.

Could someone please advise what it is for & should it be on all the time or not?

Thanks.

It's not a factory fitted part so it could be anything. You might need to trace the wires back to see where they go to.

The offending Blue Light

A disconnected switch which was stuffing up the paint inside the boot lid.

Maybe my car had some sort of alarm fitted by the previous owner. Car was supplied to me with only one key (No remote).

Any suggestions welcomed.

Possibly it is there to make people think your car has an alarm?

It almost looks to me to be usual position for the fog lamp switch?

That second picture there is a trigger switch for an alarm most likely

If you want I can come around and have a close look at it for you

My NA had a random red LED there that had something to do with the old alarm. It would flash about every 5 seconds or so when the alarm was armed.

yup that would be the alarm its there to let everyone know your car is armed should turn off when the car is on so it doesn't annoy you

but from what I can understand 2000ClassicRed is always on

Looks like a dealer installed alarm to me, I have one and it uses the same switch for the boot (but mine doesn't damage the paint as there is a protective "spot" where it contacts) and the blue light is in the same position as the red one I have.

Is there actually a switch for the fog lights on where that light is fitted?

On the NB8B the area is for the fog light switch.

Is a May 2000 a NB8B or 8A? Anyone?

I vote alarm too. My first '5 had a red LED in the same position as the alarm notification.

I'm fairly sure a 2000 is a NB8A too, hence no fog lights unless it had the fog light option (quite rare I think).

Definitely an alarm of some sort. Have also found another switch the same under the bonnet and a micro switch near the bonnet release. Most likely installed in South Australia (where car was purchased new). I would say owner #2 disconnected it for some reason. Need to find someone who knows about this type of alarm in Brisbane so I can have it reconnected/repaired. The bright blue light on my NB8A still annoys me.

Probably most of the alarm is not there- some get disconnected because they malfunction. The light has to be simple to disconnect- one snip and its gone.
