Track tyres, Which ones????????? HELP! please...........

I have talked to 4 different shops and they all strongly recomend 4 different tyres. Bridgestones are $1300 ...Toyo 888's are $1100... Yoko's are about the same and i haven't got a price for dunlop's. I know a lot of people have the toyo's, but i have been told that dunlop and bridgestone are better. Yoko's are only good to about half there life apparently.

I need to buy some soon as i am going up to winton friday 5th sep.

I have dunlops - they are good but i have nothing to compare them too. sorry but just putting in an opinion.

I have run the Toyo's and the Bridgestones.
The RE55s win by a long shot.
But since you are running in open class in Vic I highly recomend these for your competition tires

btw, have you tried trackside tyres for a quote?
They have Bridgestone and toyos plus a few other brands.

Thanks for the tip. Those tyres would be awesome, but i don't want people thinking i am cheating . I will stick to a set of r specs all the same. I have rang trackside thanks.

I have run the Bridgestones the Toyo's and the Yokohama's on my 2F race car and the TOYO R888's were the best hands down. Can get heat into them quicker than the others. Better off the start line because they have the heat in them after a warm up lap. Tyre wear was better than the other 2. Hence the tyres last a bit longer. But all those tyres are really only at their best for about 20 heat cycles. After that they start to lose their grip. Still ok but not as good.
Also lap times were considerably better on the TOYO's. About half a second on the others. Bridgestones (RE55's) were quite good but i found they took a little bit to long to come up to temp. If you are only doing supersprints that's probably not a good thing as you are not out on the track for many laps at a time. Look at most of the race cars running on treaded race tyres and 90% of them are using Toyo's.
Just my opinion but is one shared by most of the guys running 2F race cars.

I have it on good authority that the Kumho V700 is slightly cheaper than the R888 and around 1 second/lap quicker at Wakefield Park on the same car (MX5) with the same driver (a f(*&ing good one).

I'll agree with Brett the Toyo's win hands down. I can tell you that the Kumho's may be faster however they last about the 1/3 of the time of the Toyo's and are in fact dearer then the Toyo's.

Are you guys buffing your Toyo's?
I found the RE55's great after a couple of laps, where as the toyo seemed to come on strong earlier but not hold as well after 3 - 4 laps. I especially noticed they seemed to struggle for grip a bit at the rear. It could be that I was overheating them a bit due to an over heavy right foot. The RE55s where definately better towards the end of a session so I would try to get my rythm right then try for my quickest laps towards the end of the session.
That said the Toyos are definately better for hill climbs/motorkhanas etc.
I am only running sprints, and my car set up probably is not at the standard of the 2F cars seeing as it is street dríven as well. It also makes a heap more kw/torque than the N/A cars and could do with some offset bushes to get a more aggressive wheel alignment.

let me guess - they all recommended the tyres that they happen to sell?

I'd say on your car anything will be pretty good, just get a 225 or so for traction... and I reckon your lap times will be much more influenced by your driving (at this stage) than the choice of tyre).

Besides, most will be a compromise between hot, cold and wet grip.

Thanks for the input. I was leaning toward toyo's in a 205/50/15. they have a 32mm wider footprint than the 185's

We dont buff our tyres and I not sure why they would go off on your car as we run 1 hour races on them and they are consistant throughout. It could be an issue with your tyre presures getting too high after a few laps getting the toyos hot. We try to keep the tyres to no more than 29psi hot as any higher and they do get too hot and start to go away. We start at 24psi stone cold and generally check them when they are hot after 4-5laps and reset to 29-30psi. Once hot and you have them set to 29 don't touch them again for the rest of the day. You might have to run higher psi being a road car with less aggressive camber?

Interesting; the guy I was talking to said it was a no brainer. Cheaper, faster, quicker to warm up and last longer than the R888.

I'll have to pick his brain again, I might have misunderstood. I had downed several beers and pain killers for a AC tear that day. :roll:

Also interesting is that I set my R888s at 28PSI cold for Lakeside and after a few laps they started to feel much less solid. I'll try them much lower for the next one.

Hi Geoff, I was running mine at 30 psi hot and they performed spot on for me for the duration of the day :mrgreen:.....so you will definitely need to start them at a lower cold pressure.

I am also getting a wheel alignment, and neil wrote that more camber will get more heat into the tyres. How much camber should i be getting it set at?? Are there any set up specs to go by as a rough guide?
