track and street is a very different situation tho. what works for one may not work for the other. i assume wun is talking mainly about street.

Nah but you might have a point when it comes to the wet, isn't a skinnier tyre better?

the rules of physics don't change, but what we require from the tyre does change.
i think we have established that a wider tyre will give more lateral grip in extreme cornering loads as seen on the racetrack. i doubt many of us will ever experience such loads on the street. whereas a skinnier tyre should be more comfortable and have better grip in most other street situations (and in the wet?). everything is a compromise when it comes to suspension / tyres, but in general i reckon wider tyres, more suited to track use, skinnier tyres, more suited to road use. that's how i view it anyway.

I think skinnier tyres are better because they're cheaper
They also look sweet when stretched over wide wheels with dish (and add performance).
On the other hand really fat tyres look so tough!
But overall I still say the compound of the tyre is more important than the width. Even the heavy MPS6 has only 215 tyres but grips like you wouldn't believe, because of the soft compount of the tyre (18" BS RE050A).
