Got mine today and installed it

I LOVE IT :D

Benny when you installed it did you remove a black ring underneath the two pins?

Because the instructions were in german and me not knowing any german what so ever I looked at the pics and it looked like they remove the black ring so I did mine and it all works
Just wanting to know if you did or not? and how did you remove it?
I used a screwdriver for half an hour till i actually got it out

Don't know about the black ring, it was installed by Dave at Mania, but I do remember him reaming out the nylon, plastic bush to make a good fit with the bottom of the shifter lever as it was a very tight fit initially.

I live on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, and I work in Marrickville.
Just send me an e-mail to george@scala.com.au or PM me for details.

I'm happy to bring the car into work, if I know a day beforehand.

I found that mine was a little notchy and sticky for about 1 or 2,000k's, then it was like a hot knife through butter.

I can now leave my hand on the handbrake (the feel of the Benny's boot there entices me to do that) and change gears with my thumb for neutral to first and 2nd to 3rd, and my forefinger for 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th!
That's how light and easy it is now.

Hey, I read German, so if you scan in the instructions and PM to me, I can have a read and give you the low down on your ring

When stone cold, the shift into 2nd is still hard, unless you ave the revs matched up just right, but it soon warms up and is perfect then.
I'm running Red Line oil in the box, although I can't tell the difference between that and the standard oil, to be frank with you.

I ordered the last 6 spd short shifter that MX5Parts had in stock when they had their sale and it arrived a couple of days ago :D

I had a workmate who speaks German have a look at the instrucions and you do remove the black ring from below the pins. My only issue seems to be that the bush that the ball at the end of the shifter sits in seems to be a lot bigger than the ball therfore it is loose. I put it all together and everything seems to be working well. The shift is so much shorter and direct!! Definitely has that rifle bolt feel to it.

I also found that the bolts that hold the shifter to the gearbox were very loose (one was actually missing) so this would explain the vagueness in the original shifter. I highly recommend checking the bolts if you think your shift is not as good as it used to be.

While I'm at it, I may as well as the same question here as I did in the other short shift thread.

marcusus wrote:I do have one question for those of you who also have an IL short shift. Did you manage to get the last big metal ring on? I'm talking about the one that is essentially two cylinders, with one radius being larger than the other. How did you guys fit this? I found that if I used it, air would come through the gap since the ring didn't seal over the lever properly (the boots would spring it back off the lever). In the end, the solution I used was to stretch the upper boot over the gear lever boot and cable tie around that to hold them together to prevent the air coming through. I'd much prefer to use the metal ring though if someone knows how to fit it without it sliding out of position.

Any input from anyone?

That's the metal ring I've got left over. It fit into the upper boot without problems, but my boot would pop back up, and this metal ring would basically rattle against the shift lever. If you press it down, it forms quite a good seal with the thicker part of the shift lever (which is now obscured by both upper and lower boots), but there isn't enough friction between the metal ring and the lever to hold it in place. As mentioned, the boot will just pop it back up, much like the inset picture.
