SP Turbo Removal (or replacing the turbo mounting studs)
Does anyone know if you can get the turbo out of the engine bay on a road SP with the dump pipe still attached to the turbo?
Cheers

Nothing catastrophic BD, the car still runs, quite well in fact, it just sounds a bit like an old Skyline with lots of wooshing noises. One of the studs holding the turbo to the manifold has broken.
Luckily it broke flush with the turbo so should be easyish to get out, but the turbo will have to come off first. I can get to all the nuts holding the turbo on pretty easily so if the turbo comes out with the dump pipe attached then I was thinking of having a go at fixing it myself. If the dump pipe has to come off first then I'll need to get someone else to do it because I cant get to all the nuts holding the dump pipe to the turbo.

Garry Yes you can get the SP Turbo dump pipe and manifold as Unit out of the car
You will need to lossen the Left hand engine mount and jack the engine over a little
Removing and instaling as aunit means you only have one F**king B**ch basted bolt to
undo and do up.
Also get Inconel Studs

Thanks for the generous offer Bruce but I have no plans to sell my car at this stage.
Can we please keep the SP bashing out of this thread for once. I am only after some useful information to help me repair my car and I've heard all the other crap on numerous occassions already. Thankyou.

garry or russel, if you would be willing to share the info about the "super special, unbreakable, guaranteed not to fall off unobtainium" stud/nut kit i would be most appreciative. i am having all sorts of trouble trying to keep my turbo from falling off the side of the engine. you'd think after you paid some tuner shop +$400 to fic the damn thing, it would stay fixed. but nooooooo..... one visit to winton and she's come loose again

Fatty,
I got my "super special, unbreakable, guaranteed not to fall off unobtainium" stud/nut kit from Tyrone in Geelong.
I haven't seen him post on here recently though.
I can try to dig up his contact details if you want.

Well I took the heat shield off after work and there's heaps of room to get at the old studs by dropping the turbo down. So seeing as the forcast is for rain towards the end of the week and I dont like riding my bike to work in the wet and I was already part way into it I thought I might as well give it a go.
Two hours later the turbo was out of the way
15 minutes later the old studs were out
The "super special, unbreakable, guaranteed not to fall off unobtainium" studs otherwise known as Inconel studs ready to go in tomorrow night.
So......so far it's been a pretty straight forward job. Fingers crossed everything should be back together and running tomorrow night. After removing the wastegate actuator and the extra bracket on the side of my replacement turbo there looked to be nothing stopping the turbo coming out the top with the dump pipe on, but the oil return hose was still attached so I didn't try it.
Fatty,
As Russell said, I got the Inconel stud kit from GCG Turbos at Condell Park in Sydney. List price was $65 for 4 studs and nuts. They had plenty of stock in the M8x1.25x40mm that the SP uses( thanks for the info Russell
). They sell other sizes as well, I'm not sure what size you'll need. The guy originally gave me an M10 set. The Nissan guys also use some locking tabs underneath the nuts but I'm going to just give the new studs and nuts a go. Up until the last few months I hadn't been having a problem with my turbo coming loose.
