bpt4w - I already mentioned it would be easier to get a pair of seats that you can live with everyday then to go down modifying the car to fit S-C-I-S-S-O-R doors at such a ridiculous expense. Unless you are looking to attend AutoSalon or something then ignore the following advice:

At the top of my head here here are some seats that will fit, w/o having to be a contortionist to get in and out and also take seat harnesses:
Fixed - Sparco Roadsters
Reclinable - Mazdaspeed Type F, Recaro Sport JJ or SR 11, Bride Gias or Stradia

*Bear in mind that the fitment of a Roll bar/cage, which takes up some cabin space, may effect how far back the seat may slide back or recline. This is not the 'ultimate' list of MX5 seats, just what I have tried personally and what are in friends' MX5s.

There are other seats that will fit but because of higher side & corner seat design, will make it really hard to get in and out.

I have tried Recaros SR3s, Sparco Sprints, EVO, Pro2000, Recaro Milleniums etc. Either I had to lack of space due to my roll cage so I couldn't push the seat back any further or to recline it OR the door wouldn't close w/o removing of the standard NA6CE door handle/rest :roll:

Anyway, I hope you make your decision carefully as I believe modifying your doors in order to get in and out of your Sprints is a HUGE undertaking.

Wun you would be horrified... The scissor door kits I saw required a huge bracket (looked like cast iron... hopefully not...) to be mounted where the door hinges... along with other required bracketry...

Might as well weld the doors shut... then you could ditch the hinges and latches... :lol:

I thought it was a joke. What is the advantage? If you park closer to another vehicle in a car park that merely gives the other driver or passenger(s) a better chance of damaging your bodywork. The negatives outweigh any advantage- if you can even think of a plus.The engineering challenges are significant just for a wacky idea. If there was truly merit in these ideas they would be in regular use and they aren't.

There IS true merit in the idea. It just takes someone with nous and initiative (and a bit of cash) to do it. Ask meanmx, who tinkered with a kit for scissor doors.
Seriously, Mr Morlock, try and be positive occasionally about stuff...

I've often contemplated this, but I'm always thrown by the sideways twist you'd need to actually get in under the steering wheel. Or are you just talking about jumping onto the seat, and not actually jumping into the sitting position, as it were?

cannot see any merit at all- just to be different I reckon and that expensive super car is hardly mainstream. If the merit was there then why not any serious uptake- we know why.

I shake my head at you Mr Morlock. Remember not everyone is a member of your Mazda did it perfect club.

I did a fair bit of research into scissor doors a little while ago as I am a member of the autosalon club :D . In fact I went so far as to buy a kit and try to fit it. Here's the story...I bought an autoloc kit from the US about a year ago and tried fitting them to my car. It was the weld on type and I got most of the way through fitting the passenger side one before realising there just isn't the room in the front guard to use this particular kit. The autoloc kit I bought was very very high quality and it was built in such a way as to eliminate all the complaints that people have stated thus far, and the only problem was that it was too thick. Much better suited to a bigger car.

Now after failing to fit this kit I started looking around at alternatives. First alternative is the cheap kit. This kit you can pick up for around $1300 from retailers in Australia or much cheaper overseas. The problems with it are that it is relatively flimsy. This is the one that waves in the air as it is unstable, although having said that, it wont fall on you or anything so it is safe in that respect. It should bolt straight on to your current bolt holes and I believe that the alignment issues are caused by not loctiting the adjustment bolts

Second option is a new skinnier autoloc kit from the US. Haven't seen this personally but if it is anything like the one that I had then it will be of a very high quality. Will cost you about 2 grand delivered and I can't remember if it is bolt on or not

Third option is by a company called scissor-doors.com who do a bolt on kit for the MX5. I know nothing about the quality or how good a fit it is but it costs about $800US before delivery

I'm sure there are others but I looked around a little while ago. I think the scissor doors look brilliant on the MX5 and it really suits the sports car lines. It will stop you hitting the car next to you when you park but you may not find it any easier to get out of. And if you don't like attention these are definately not the go. They stick out like dogs balls :lol: . I had a mate with scissor doors on his Skyline and he got pulled over by the cops for a check. He managed to get out of the car without lifting the door up but then the cop for some reason opened the door himself. When he couldn't open it more than 30 degrees he thought it was damaged and turned to my mate and said "Oh yeah been drifting have we?" :lol:

This little puppy was on ebay either late last year or early this year. I think the scissors look pretty cool, but certainly not my cup'o'tea.

Lots of MX-5s have part of the rear bumper cut out because it acts like a bit of a sail. I think gurgler would be a well known Aussie example.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

ok i was very tired from work and playing WOW (yes i'm one of them) so i spelled it wrong (scissor doors) hope you feel warm and fuzzy :) .

Yes have thought of changing my seats to something else , but at 6'1 i didn't fit in the car properly with the standard seats (long body)so i did the standard sparco sprint change which put me another 2 inchs lower so i can now see the lights when i stop (used to almost be eye level with the top of the windscreen) . Have thought about changing to the non adjustable seats bolted to the floor which will put me even lower in the car and allow my helmet to be under the roll bar during racing , but all this is beside the point that if the car isn't useable as a daily driver for me (atm) and even with the low bolster seats it will still require a fair bit of gymnastics to get into the car (atm i can just step over the door into the car with the top down) with the top up or the hard top on.

I have been thinking about maybe combining my idea's with a company door lifter , mine is to make it electric so push a button, the door pops and zips up , main problem will be getting this fast enough but if they can lift a 50kg rear door on a toyota prado ,i recon they should lift a 20kg door easy. Or if i'm really going to make it easier i could just get some CF doors which drops the weight considerable and removes half the problems of scissor doors and would come in at about the same cost as a expensive door lifter kit (they cost $2000 for the pair) , engineering side this is really not that big a deal , after i have fitted a electric aircon and electric power steering (the pump is electric) and mount them out of the way of the low mount turbo (yes it clears the left side of the engine clear for the turbo) , this is just a interesting door problem compared to those.

Yes i will post those other projects after i have finished them (have the gear in the shed but not the mounts made yet).
