Just get a "drift button" or tape the button down during events.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

For a temporary fly off, duct tape a $1 coin over the button while holding the button in. The coin is bigger than the button so easier for the tape to hold down. This works a treat for motorkhanas etc.

You're one of those rich mining boom engineers, the rest of us can use 10 cents.

fly-off handbrake for MX5 ???
I've been thru the tape over the button, to a screw in the side of the handbrake that holds the button mechanism in all day, to a dedicated hydraulic h'brake now. The second option worked well if u r happy to go without the plastic shield over the hbrake and know where to put the hole for a small self tapping screw. If u r keen just say and I'll get a pic of where it needs to be precisely.

fly-off handbrake for MX5 ???
Thanks for the input guys. Looks like lots have used the old "universal go-fast" : duct tape. I'll pull the handbrake apart on the weekend and see if it is amenable to a conversion to "fly-off" , otherwise the 10 cent solution or a pin thru the side might be the go at least for gymkhanas etc. Somewhere I had an old triumph spitfire handbrake which would probably fit with modification to the bracket, but alas after a couple of house moves I cant find it!.Fly-offs require the ratchet NOT to engage unless and until the button is pushed in- the opposite of the typical sedan set up.To release the handbrake, just jerk it up a notch, and drop it: virtually instantaneous and no possibility of it getting hung up like the normal set up. English sports cars from the late 30's through till the demise of Triumph in about 1980 typically had fly-offs. Standard kit on all Triumph TRs , and on T series MGs.. If I can modify the MX5 unit, Ill post some pix, as it is a really worthwhile thing to have.

You're right, I am showing my age! Yeah, same as motorkhana. Been into the Tr2s-3As continuously since 1975, but always up for a new challenge, besides these MX5s are soooo much fun round corners!!
