sound level checking in Brisbane. Who can do it?

Postby Steampunk » Sun Jul 20, 2008 11:31 pm

Does anyone in Brisbane have equipment to check sound levels?

Lakeside has a sound level limit of 100dB, and although I doubt mine is that loud, I would rather be safe than sorry.

well.... the Stebel is rated at 139dB and we both know that is pretty freakin' loud.
A loud vacuum cleaner is around 70dB....

dude i've got a sound meter on my phone :P Don't know how accurate it is. Seriously though I don't think your car is that loud. Zoomzoom or lil_mikes car would be louder. I wouldn't worry about it. If you are maybe see if strathfield or one of those carsound places can test your car if they are generous enough.

I have access to a calibrated noise level meter through work. If there is enough call for it I could take it along to MX5 Plus one weekend and we can have a sound-off.

The scale is logarithmic. 100dB is 1,000 times the intensity of 70dB.

Wouldn't stress too much.

TheMissus and I went to a track day there recently and I too was worried but for noooooo reason. The only car they checked was a RX-7 SV with pipes out the side and making A LOT of noise and he was still allowed to run 8)

Let's keep this on a "need to know" basis eh?

I would suggest that you make enquiries at one of the academic or technical institutions to give you some information. I am not sure if checking the sound level is quite as easy as it might seem.

I'm sure the professional acoustics guys I would borrow the meter from would give me clear instructions on it's use and the effects of background and refelective surfaces etc.

They do this stuff for a living so they know their stuff.

Mark, thanks for the offer, I'll take you up on it if need be.

SteveS1 is an acoustics/sound engineer and he called me this arvo.
He is going to find out exactly what parameters Lakeside is after, ie. stationary at 1 or 5 or 10 metres, driving by at 90degrees from the end pipe, driving by at 45degrees from the tail pipe etc etc.

I reckon you're worrying over nothing Andrew, your car isn't that noisy, unless you're just interested of course.
