building a new turbo engine

Postby spikey » Fri Jul 18, 2008 7:15 pm

I'm going to start an engine build, the first one I did not really know much about the B6 engine,I just got a set of new factory B6 turbo pistons, then just got the heads reconditioned, put a turbo kit on it and it seems to be holding up pretty well on 15psi making 230hpatw.
This time I want to build something stronger, got a B6 turbo head and B6t turbo engine,so need some advice what and where to buy the pistons, rods, what cams to use,if you have done this project before let me know what you have found useful,it would save a lot of time and money to do it right the first time.
Thanks
Terry

The engine got pistons and rods, but I might need oversize pistons if they need to be machined.

If you are producing around 173KW which I guess might be double a standard car ( at the rear wheels) what are you trying to achieve? Is it the engine that is the weak link or other components such as gearboxes clutches uni joints etc.

I just wanted a spare engine just incase something happens to this one ,it still has the standard rods, aren't they a weak point?I have the clutch to handle the power, Nb clutch pack diff, rx7 brakes all round, basically something to do.

Spikey,
My B6T stock bottom end has lasted 6 years on 1bar or 14.5psi daily tune.
For autokhana/sprints/track days, I have used another fuel map and turned it up to 1.4 bar or 20 psi.

It is still going strong. If you have a spare B6T bottom end, keep it as is. They're getting a bit harder to come by. I have my doubts that the trouble of using a GTX/GTR turbo head is worth the hassle as most of your GReddy kit won't fit.

My 2 cents.
Les

Mate,
Yeah I'm doing alright :)

I don't think your GReddy turbo manifold will fit the GTX/GTR head without modifications.

And yes save your money - fuel is getting ridiculous these days

I'm still tossing up which cams to use ,I have the turbo cams off the b6t with 7.9mm lift ,Maruha Na cams 8.5mm lift or my current b6 Na cams that I'm running, which one do you think I should run in my car?

Is the reason for the aftermarket cams to shift the powerband further up? I thought that with your GReddy kit & the TD05, full boost would already by pretty far up the rev range say 4000rpm or so? So really... unless you are chasing more power higher up in the rev range, I can't really see the benefits.

Stick to stock.

My 2 cents.

Intake is the same cam, only the exhaust cams are different.

Ehaust cam from turbo will help bring boost on a tad sooner.

My recommendation - stock B6T bottom end, cometic gasket, MX5 head.
When results speak for themselves - don't interrupt.
