NB8A turbo info required

Postby travyMX5 » Wed Jul 16, 2008 7:37 pm

Hey all,
Looking at running an AVO turbo kit on my NB8A with standard internals.
Only want to run 6-7psi and have roughly 120kw @ the wheels.

Kit includes-T28 turbo, cast manifold, stainless dump pipe, intercooler + pipes, air filter, Blow off valve, all oil and water lines connectors etc, fuel and ignition piggy back computer, extra injector.

My car already runs PWR 40mm radiator, oil cooler, 2.25\" mandrel bent stainless exhaust (which i plan to splice with the dump pipe and reuse) , shocks, sway bars, upgraded brake disc, pads, lines good fluid, LSD, half cage etc...

With the turbo kit i would also add High flow fuel pump, fuel press regulator, electronic boost controller, boost gauge, air fuel gauge, turbo timer, mazdaspeed engine and diff mounts and button clutch.

What else would you recommend??

Can the 5 speed box handle 120kw at the wheels??
Would it b wise to run a thicker head gasket to drop compression??
Anything i have over looked??

Can any other NB8A owners who have done similar let me know what reliability issues they have had?? any info at all would be really great!!

I track the car and need it reliable for that.

thank u peoples :)

With your setup I would run 140kw and enjoy. Your car is much better setup than a lot of other cars are before they are turboed.

You will be fine; the BP can handle around 12PSI of boost if tuned properly. You don't need to drop compression. If you are clutch popping the 5 speed can be killed with <100kw. If you look after it you can push 150-160kw. (probably not on the track)

yep, you are already good to go. for the power goals you're after you shouldn't need to do any of that stuff like bigger fuel pump , clutch etc . just put the avo kit on and enjoy!

fyi i am running an old avo kit on my na6, 120kw at the wheels. the engine is stock, i have a 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhuast , standard 5 speed, and upgraded radiator. i track the car with the vic club, doing sprints it is reliable on the track in it's current state. altho i had a few problems with the turbo blowing a gasket after our recent track day at phillip island, but that is just coz my kit is over 10 years old i think....

you wont need the ebc, not sure what the standard kit runs but it'd be around what your after psi and power wise. I'd go an ebc if you want more than around 12psi or if your MBC spikes too high (spike will be worse with a small exhaust, and or crap filter)
Also the A/F gauge is just for bling, unless your tune is bad (bad computer, make changes to the car without re-tuning etc) your A/F ratios will be stable.
You wont need the regulator either that standard will do the job just fine.
I reckon your stock clutch will probably hold out, or at most you'll need a heavy duty pressure plate, no need to go hardcore with the disk.

turbo

Postby travyMX5 » Thu Jul 17, 2008 7:31 pm

thanx guys.
does the stage one avo piggy back computer just control the 5th (extra) injector or does it control the 4 standard ones also??

i may upgrade the injectors as the fuel is partly used for cooling of the cylinders.

this is my daily which i track- bad combo i know...but i need it to be really reliable. i cant afford to have it off the road.

when fitting the avo kit did it require u to drop the motor so u can drill the oil return line into the sump??

what causes boost spike?? i would have thought the smaller exhaust would have limited it as the turbo would b restricted from flowing more??

any other advice??

thank u :)

drilling the sump is a very easy task, even while the engine is still in the car .... but yeah getting that manifold on and all the bolts done up is a major PITA!

gearbox should certainly cope with 120kw. theres a racing NA here in Adelaide that broke the 5 speed gearbox at 210kwatw. but at his usual 180kwatw it did survive.
