A Standard Shock absorber will usually fade after around 60,000klm to 70,000klms. (it's just that most of us don't recognize this happening.

85,000klms is well past and I would look at new shocks,

Not too say that at 85,000klms the shocks don't work any more, it's just that they start to wear, thats why a Koni, was really only ever adjustable not for ride quality but so you can adjust them when this fade occurs, I know a lot of ppl here will not agree with me on this, but I don't mind.

I also don't care much about height and looks.

If you can adjust height you can corner weight the car.

If your jap spec is too harsh and bumpy you can adjust the height and dampening. I think jap spec is simply more affordable.

To make it more 'affordable' install them yourself, (It's not that difficult, and I'm a weak nubelet)

I only changed mine recently with 140 k km and its a real noticeable improvement in handling. I think its one of those things that slowly wear out and you just don't quite notice how bad it is until you change them.

The choice to go with coilovers should not only be an asthetic consideration; it should also reflect what you are using the car for.

If it was mainly a daily hack/weekend cruiser, then replacement shocks would do the trick. But with track usage being on the menu, then IMHO you should spring for the coilovers, pun intended :D

My last car (IS200) had TRD coilovers in it that lasted me for 100'000kms and half a dozen track days at Wakefield, not to mention various skid pan activities and the like. They were a little punishing for daily driving, although this was made bearable by fitting wider, softer tires for road use. These coilovers were starting to show signs of their age when it came time to sell, but being repairable gives the option of extending their lifespan considerably.

I went through 4 sets of suspension with that car, including Koni/Eibach and TRD replacement shocks/springs before i ended up with the coilovers. Should have done coilovers from the beginning.

Replaced my stock shocks / springs with tein superstreets recently and I have to say is one of the best mods that really brings out the handling prowess of the mx5 :). In the end, the choice of a adjustable damper + spring combo usually works out close to the price of tein superstreet coilovers anyway. I got mine for $1330 shipped from japan

Have a look here, http://www.aus-cartalk.com/viewtopic.php?t=31053

I have now found there is a better answer than adjustable shocks and/or coilovers for those not wanting to play with the height of their car.

IIRC, GSM40-B1SS3 comes with upper mounts whilst the GSM40-A1SS2 does not, meaning u will have to reuse your existing mounts.
