I believe that light is hooked up to the Rear O2 sensor (that tells the engine there's a cat as I understand it). I would start there.

I had a similar problem with a Lancer that I once owned. Check Engine Light would come on when in really hot weather, but not alot in winter. Car would run perfect, and Mitsu dealer couldn't find anything wrong. I just lived with it. When I sold the car, the next owner (fully aware of the problem before purchase) took the car to an auto electrician to look at another problem, and found a crack in the instrument panel PCB, that would open up when hot and cause the check engine light to come on. Very rare I would think, but something to keep in mind.
