I want to install my stainless steel lines and while im at it take the calipers off for a paint job.
Can you clamp shut stainless steel brake lines using vice grips etc? Or will that ruin them?

Clamping the SS lines will ruin them.
You'll need to change virtuallly all the brake fluid anyway. Just take off each brake hose at the caliper first and let it drain into a bucket Then remove the calipers and, before cleaning them, compress each caliper over the bucket to squeeze out the fluid. This is to stop fluid running everywhere when you paint them. Then replace calipers, then replace and connect SS hoses.
Dispose of old fluid responsibly.

And judging by some of the posters it is a sport that is catching on . It's hard not to when he wants to shave his disc rotor down to minimum clearance to save weight

Ohhh I kinda know why they didnt feel as frim as they should have. I over tightened a banjo bolt and kinda cracked it. I was lucky to get it out of the caliper in one piece. (what are the torqe speces to these things anyway?)
I was lucky it leaked a fair bit of fluid kinda lucky I could stop. The paint \"really\" is chemical resistant its still red, its kinda wun proof.
New washer new bolt all is good and firm now. Driving around still looking for leaks and makin sure the lines dont rub against anything.
The only odd thing about the ss lines is that they they dont have that hook thing at the end of the line that attaches to the caliper so its difficult to tighten the banjo bolt. ie as you tighten the line moves so you have to hold it with pliers/vice grips etc.
I have kept all the OEM lines for a weigh in, new ones are 403.4 grams in total...

Hmm, he could save some unsprung weight if he shaved down those pads. And painting the calipers would have added at least 20 grams.
