SS vs SP

Postby Novice1 » Wed Jun 25, 2008 5:24 pm

Commodore SS manual 1770 kgs, auto 1785 kgs.
Power 270kw atw 20 % drivetrain loss = 216kw flywheel

Using http://www.letstorquebhp.com/calculator.asp gives the manual SS

166.47bhp/ton

MX5 SP 1130 kgs from memory
Power 156kw flywheel , 20 % drivetrain loss = 124kw atw

Using above calculator give the SP

149.26 bhp/ton

The SS should dominate.

0-100kmh/hr figures SS 6.42 secs
SP 7.07 secs

Having dríven a VE SS that surprises me, I can understand a turbo mx5 feeling as quick as one of them, but actually being as quick as one.. Stock 0-100 is between 5.2-5.8 seconds.

I was surprised too. I was expecting him to run away from me. Maybe if we'd kept going he may have started to make some ground on me. He lost a bit of ground when he changed into second and got a heap of wheel spin, but he made it up again in my gear change. From memory a stock SP did 0-100kmh in 6.3s, a manual SS ute does it in 5.8s? (a bit slower than the auto apparently). My car isn't quite stock any more so I guess I could have lost 0.5s in the 0-100kmh sprint or maybe he got an average start, but it was neck and neck.

Hmm, the fact that his was a manual makes a little more sense, and he must have had the stability control off which is stupid. With our auto you can pretty much give it everything from the start and it just goes, no fuss no wheel spin, just amazing acceleration. Turning it off and modulating the throttle makes it a lot more difficult to lauch perfectly, although possible it make no difference to the times, the system is that good. It must be worth .5 of a second for an average driver. Although I don't believe our system is standard SS spec, I believe it may have the HSV settings. Never the less, for the average SS ute driver not using it would account for a slower time.

Using your figures Novice 1 garry would need aproximatly an additional 25 bhp to have a better power to weight ratio. Given that it is possible for a SS to be beaten by a SP if the mx5 driver is on his game.

If racing SS commodores just watch out for the ones with three aerials on the back and a man with a light blue shirt driving. I've seen an un-marked cop car begin to drag a WRX Sti, then flick on the siren and pull him over....

I nearly got trapped by that over 10 years ago going over the westgate bring a couple of unsold cars back from fowles, there was a guy in a hotted up crumpledoor egging people on to race him over the bridge, he finally found someone who was eager for a go and the next moment the flashing lights were on in his unmarked hotted up car.
It looked nothing like an unmarked too.........!

[quote="StanTheMan"]on the other hand...if the anchor on the chain happened to be with you. and you happen to get away with that indescretion......

that would not have happened...the trouble and striff does NOT do speed. she would have screamed louder than the V8, and whinned a lot longer than the supercharger

but of course you stopped at the speed limit and had no idea that person next to you had also decided they wanted to get a quick start, had nothing to do with you being there 8)

dont know the speed 'cause i was looking straight ahead...third gear @ redline...whats that....as for racing, well it started without much thought, and finished before the thought could be digested...in truth it was the first time i have proceeded towards WOT...

I'm surprised mhj, did you launch properly or just start as usual?
4k + release clutch + more gas = most cars left behind (at least until 2nd gear)

didnt actually intend \"a race\", so normal start till i was aware of the potential to miss my corners...then i pushed it harder

I believe 1red5 is running a group buy for one @ $65. I believe the quality is good. You could check with other people who have bought one off him.

I'm sure the sortshifter is a ton of fun. Its going to make your suprecharged 5ver even more fun. And thats what its all about. I suppose the most anoying part is that he slowed down through the Bilgowlah bends. I supose you might be up against him again soon....

An additional 25hp on an SP can be had for a $2 mod so I am told.

I, love my short shifter. Got it 2nd hand from mania. Easy to fit, well worth

the money.

That'd be less than the speed limit then... what with your rear tyres worn down so much as to shorten your gearing. Nothing illegal there...
