short shifter

A funny thing happened on my way home last night.

I was tootling along, top down, moon shining, whereupon i was stopped at a red light just before a pleasant set of corners. I took the inside lane thinking i will just move ahead of the outside lane car with a view to some mild mannered enjoyment.

And then the bugger proved that 286 kw of screaming, wheel chirping v8 comadore stn wgn out accelarates jrsc mixy...but only just( i think)...the difference was auto v manual.... and then the swine slowed down to granny pace for the corners.

upshot...i think i would like a short shifter

? what is the best quality device?

? is there a king of kings, man amongst men, benevolent compasssionate super human( perhaps more commonly known as boags) out there who is interested in facilitating a gb for the shortshift?

great story.....but whats the short shifter going to do for you?


to beat a car like that you'd gain at least a car length.....short shifter isn't going to do that on the traffic light GP.


however.....I've always lusted after a shortshifter.......and some camms, and a megasquirt...and,and,and..... :lol: :mrgreen:

on the other hand...if the anchor on the chain happened to be with you. and you happen to get away with that indescretion......

you could say.....Now If I had myself one of those short shifters.....I might have beaten that bogan....and she might even agree with you.....

i have an IL motorsports short shifter on mine and i seriously love it.

I dont know if it would improve times by much, but it makes you FEEL like your driving an F1 car! Takes a bit of getting used to due to the increased force required, but it is SO worth it!

What you really need is an SP my friend not some nancy boy toy gear lever. :P I surprised a guy in a new SS Commodore ute the other day. He seemed to think he'd blow away the \"abracadabra in the hairdressers car\" in the next lane. We were side by side up to 3rd gear until we backed off. He might think twice next time he comes across an MX5.

PS I in no way condone street racing. It is illegal and may result in the impounding of your car. But sometimes it just has to be done. :oops:

he has done one modification and has run 13.1


anyone want to guess what the mod was?

Since adding a blower to my car I can out accelerate most stock cars on

the road, including SS commodores and WRX's.

The IL motorsport short shifter in my opinion doesn't make much difference.

Mind you with every kilowasp I notice that my petrol consumption is not

what it was.

but of course you stopped at the speed limit and had no idea that person next to you had also decided they wanted to get a quick start, had nothing to do with you being there 8)

I'm surprised mhj, did you launch properly or just start as usual?
4k + release clutch + more gas = most cars left behind (at least until 2nd gear)

Having dríven a VE SS that surprises me, I can understand a turbo mx5 feeling as quick as one of them, but actually being as quick as one.. Stock 0-100 is between 5.2-5.8 seconds. We timed Dads (factory modifed) one at 4.8 with two people and 3/4 of a tank of petrol :shock: Although no doubt an SP is an impressive car and the power to weight ratio would be pretty similar.

That being said when i'm really trying my NA6 can beat my mates VT-VZ commodore V6's as well as anything else my peers drive. I always find it funny when they tell me there new x is going to "rip" my mx5. I had one mate who just got an Astra SRI (non turbo) and preceded to very nearly completly loose it trying to keep up in a corner. (this was always at legal speeds of course) :)

Would a short shifter actually make a difference in shift time?

not at all, and you don't dump the clutch (too much wheelspin) just release it just right and it'll grip and go 8)

I was surprised too. I was expecting him to run away from me. Maybe if we'd kept going he may have started to make some ground on me. He lost a bit of ground when he changed into second and got a heap of wheel spin, but he made it up again in my gear change. From memory a stock SP did 0-100kmh in 6.3s, a manual SS ute does it in 5.8s? (a bit slower than the auto apparently). My car isn't quite stock any more so I guess I could have lost 0.5s in the 0-100kmh sprint or maybe he got an average start, but it was neck and neck.

brb going for a hoon on my new white on green P plates to continue playing on this stereotype

it's green on white
and if your out hooning don't forget to turn up the stereo, weave between lanes, don't indicate, use aftermarket HID's, blue number plate lights, dual cannon exhaust, undercar neons (of course)
most of all, go trade in the Mx5 for a Skyline/Supra/180SX/200SX/WRX

while we're looking at stereotypes I guess we are all hairdressers here :roll:
