NA6 Turbo Adelaide Update

tick4d, you can buy an SP/SE that is already turbo and then you can modify to your hearts content without the need for emissions testing. At the end of the day, the dollars spent may end up being equal... Probably the way to go in my opinion!

This is what i was quite seriously considering also.. it really is the only easy way to keep the boys in blue off your back, mind you i know someone in particular in adelaide who's had their AVO kit in since they first brought it out ( like 12 yrs) or something and never had any issues or major runs...

that'd be the better way to go in my opinion. too bad i can't stretch my finances too afford one of the SE/SPs & i certainly couldn't keep my current NA6 alongside it as well.

but my other alternative is getting a second older car, the one i almost got instead of the MX-5 which is the Familia GTR (or even GTX). does the stuff the MX-5 can't do & is practical enough (though I wish they made them in a 5 door version). paying two insurances & rego though.. might end up costing me more in the long run.

Sean I agree with your comments, any modification which could impact on the gas mix in the combustion of an engine should theoritically have to be retuned to meet emission standards which would cover things such as an intercooler as you mentioned, an exhaust, an air filter etc... Although the likelihood of being requested to visit an IM240 test is much less on a factory turbo than something modded.

I visited the tuner again today, the tune is coming along. You can now give the engine some rev's without it coughing and spluttering, sounds really neat - like a normal engine! Next week the car may run a like IM240 test to flush the final details out.

Update. I picked my car up on Friday afternoon and I will be taking it for the emissions test this Tuesday at Regency Park. Stephen ran the car through his emissions test and all passed (I have pic's of the output showing actual vs target) on all 5 gases that make up combustion, so theoritically it should pass the IM240. I just need to change the oil and filter and cross my fingers!

I'll post again Tuesday night with either good or bad news.

Hello! My silence is a mix of bad and good news!

The bad news is that I took the car to regency and it failed the test, I have some intermittent issue that I am trying to put my finger on. Under load at about 3,000 rpm it has this voilent miss. I am in the process of re-checking vacuum lines, wiring, plumbing and anything else that comes to mind... This is quite an annoying miss to find. Stephen has tried to advance/retard timing, add more/less fuel etc but this miss is still there. I think it is a process of elimination to find what this fault is.

Good news is that I have a new role, but it requires a relocation to Wollongong in NSW - hence why I have been a bit quiet on here as my spare time is being consumed rapidly.

My car will not be coming over to NSW until it has passed regency and all is good. So I'll be working away in the background trying to find out what is wrong. If anyone has any suggestions as to what it could be then please share!

Wouldn't you need to register it in NSW? If so, why not get it engineered in NSW too?

It's not something basic like plug gap is it?

Depends on teh temp range of the plugs. I was running 8s and 9s in my turbo MX5.

Stock gap of 1.1mm worked fine on 7-8psi, gapped down to 0.9mm when we were running over 15psi. I only mentioned gaps becuase I was getting ignition break-down at about 3500rpm when we had the gap too big, particularly with the 9s in.

From memory the plugs were B9EGV and B8s.

Mmm sounds familiar re ignition break-down and around the same sort of rev's too. It starts to feel like you're going somewhere but then it cuts out and then will re-ignite and go again...

Hi Bark,

How old is your MSPNP?

If it is earlier than Feb 2008 then you may need a capacitor in your ingition input to stop noise (especially if you're running hi-res code).

Hi All,

I have tried the step colder plugs with a gap of 27 thou but no improvement. I did email diyautotune last night and they have told me the following:

\"It sounds like you may have an older version that occasionally had a misfire on certain cars but not others. We have corrected that with the newest version. Could you please have a look at the underside of your MSPNP? There's a sticker on it that should say which version it is. Is it marked \"Rev A,\" \"Rev B,\" \"Rev C,\" or none of these? Let me know and I'll tell you where to go from there.\"

So I have gone back to them tonight with my response. Will keep you posted!

I haven't reviewed my data log as my cable is with the tuner and he isn't working this week as his wife has given birth to their first child...

Unsheilded CAS wiring to the ECU could cause issues dependant on the ECU. I'd wait for the response from the manufacturer.

Is your car an NA6?
Sabretooth had a similar problem with his NA8 and changed to an NA6 CAS which is optical instead of Hall-effect.

There was a thread I found on one of the US forums of a guy who did the same.

So if yours is an NA8, there might be something in swapping to an NA6 CAS.
