You took the bits home to put on the lounge room floor??!!

Some nice work there - was it the 18lb boost or the 10,000rpm buzz or both? I can't see too clearly in the pictures, but the pistons look okay. Tuning must be spot on?

I dropped by last night to say hi - saw Turbo Boy on the hoist less engine (you don't muck around).

No one was around, so I pinched the beer money left out on the smoko table for counting and made a quick escape

The standard engines do have soft rods.
They are fine for any NA engine, but if you want to run more than 5 or 6 lbs of boost (less than 0.5 atm), you'll need stronger rods.

I bet that every SP out there has at least one bent rod in the block, even if it is stock standard.

An engine builder, who specialises in Mazda motors told me that he bought a burned out SP which only had 10,000k's on it, and even it had 2 slightly bent rods.

Invest in some forged rods, and you'll be fine at 18lbs.

Hmm

When I make that SP replica one day I'll have to remember never to go over 17.5psi just to be on the safe side

We found it was torque rather than power that broke bits for us, probably a completely different story in a race car dríven hard all the time then a street car that rarely see's high boost.

I think the 11,000 revs Russell hit at Bathurst (wrong gear) rather helped in the curvature of the rods, meaning that they were slightly bent already before Oran Park

  I don't think so George... over 170,000k, mostly on 10+ lbs (for a short while 13  ) and not an issue.
You don't tend to drive around for too long with a bent rod before something tries to escape from your block!
(probably jinxed myself now... )

I ran 15psi on a stock BP for ~6000kms, probably 1000 of them on the track. The motor was turbo for 40,000kms and was running fine when I pulled it out.

My car was running fine too when I had the engine taken out.
You might think you don't have any bent rods, but I bet that when you take the engine out, and check them, you might get a surprise!
