I've heard a few stories about the \"mousetrap\" syndrome, yet every photo I have ever seen of a rolled MX-5 with a style bar has the bar completely upright, whereas the A pillars are usually bent right over.

Personally, I think the mousetrap concoction was just made up by someone who wants to sell proper roll bars and is trying to talk people out of stylebars.
If anyone has some photos of moustrapping style bars, I'd love to see them, because I have never seen one.

I have the RBII bars on my 5, and they seem to be very strong, and because they lay backwards just a little, I really couldn't see how they would mousetrap you.
If anything, they might bend backwards, but certainly not forwards.
The factory style bars, however, are much weaker in their construction and mounting compared to most style bars.
Looking at those Frog bars, I can't see that they actually tie the 2 seat belt mounts together, and if they don't, they won't ad much to the car's rigidity unlike most style bars that do, and the metal above the fuel tank, which is where they look like they mount, isn't very thick or strong either..

Guys - it is pretty clear - there are style bars for looks and there are rollbars for function. Your style bars may do more harm than good. A roll bar presumably has been carefully tested to do what it is designed to do- give you extra protection in the event of roll over.
Discussion on freight- it is all checkable- find out the size and weight packed a formula is used to determine if the goods are volumetric ( ie they charge by weight or by volume which ever is the larger. failing that - the seller can quote freight - anyway see other recent posts

Thanks to all for your input..

Because i wanted to stay with my no drill policy i ended up getting a frenzy TT stylebar.
It met all my criteria,no holes drilled,tucks in nicely behind the headrests,extra storage(has a bag that fits under the datum point of the bar) and also has a perspex windblocker.
I'm not too worried about rolling the car...Not that much of a stunt driver.

to the people who make their choice based on whether you need to cut into the plastic trim or drill holes.... you do realise that you can buy replacement trim and cover up any extra holes, very cheaply and easilly, yes?

mx5 plus, mx5 centre , mx5 mania etc would have the parts you need to get it back to stock appearance with minimum fuss and expense.

does it really? i dont like any of the factory style bars, each to their own i guess.

Indeed it is. I'm not a fan of the eBay bling ones. In the end with these things, it's always going to be down to personal preference. I doubt either of them add anything significant to structural rigidity, although admittedly the bling ones will probably do more since there's a horizontal bar as well.

LOL. but anywa to answer the question yes it does exist. i think boss frog make one like that. or it might be the other big yanky mob, can't remember their name atm ... ive seen one fitted to an NA at winton 6 hour earlier this year.

I've seen it too. It's kinda like a BD bar, but with the cross bracing going from the passenger side to the driver's side, and it hoops behind the driver.

Don't have a name or anything though. Just memories (assuming they haven't been fabricated by my mind).

This is how I dream/think...

It should be cheaper (less materials used = less weight = less shipping costs). Hopefully equal or less than the weight of a passenger seat.
