Rain Rail

do you have a bigger picture i can't really see it

is that the water running down direclty under the bolt/nut if so then the water is making its way thru the hole that was made for the bolt to go thru

Try this shot.

The water appears to be either coming in through that bolt hole or somewhere in that vacinity.

Any suggestions?

Remove the set plate (the black metal thing at around the base of the soft top) and have a look. You might have a crack in the rain rail or maybe a small hole in the roof at that point

well today it out of no where it rained like mad for 5 min sounded like hail storm at work i was thinking ono my car nooo but it was just heavy and lots and lots of rain

Turns out to be a cracked rain rail

Anyway, it's getting out sorted out today. Damn, if those things aren't a little pricy!

Be aware that the rain rail can be repaired with good quality water proof tape. I have done this on two MX-5s, the last time about two years ago and it it is holding up well.

If you do need to (or want to) replace it there are much cheaper options available from the states, which is where I believe AZNTien got his replacement rail.

Thanks for the advice Juffa but it looks too damaged in too many places to do a fix-it. I think that I could have probably got it repaired when I had the roof replaced last year but the trimmer never mentioned it as an issue and in hindsight, I should have asked him about the condition of the rain rail. I suspect though that some of the damage was caused during the install.

Unfortunately with all the rain right now (and more forecasted), I don't have the luxury of waiting for delivery from the US for the unit that AZNTien purchased, as much as I would love to save the bucks. At this stage it is going to cost around $550 fitted. Ouch!

$550 ouch!! alright

well it took me say a month
had to get a cheque and send it to them because they dont unfortuantely accept international credit cards bank transfers etc ..

and its also made out of polyurethane not plastic and has a lifetime warranty (lol its not like i would take it off send it back to them wait a few months while my car has no rain rail)

last night driving home from dropping off swmbo, i heard a slosh coming from the rear..

this morning, i found my boot was filled with water.. :cry:

after 1.5 hours of spraying water from a hose like a mad man and checking all the drains were cleared, i peered into my boot to find water was leaking from a certain area from where i can imagine the rain rail would sit.. :frown:

i'm going to try and seal it up with some silicon and/or water proofing tape, if not, i think i'll get this genuine \"upgraded\" mazda rain rail:

One set rain rail fix is to use your cracked rain rail with a thornproof MTB tube (around $20) lining the outside of the rail. Rivet the whole thing together no more leaks!

Glad if Sliq gets a good deal. I am just staggered at the prices being charged for such items. The material cost is next to zilch and the tooling if just manufactured to mould in one material ( not a co moulding like the original appears to be) would be relatively cheap judging by the amount of flash on the parts. If there was access to the original supplier which you cannot get then the price would be nothing like these rip offs. ampz showed commendable ingenuity.
