tein coilovers vs shock abs and springs

time is soon coming to replace shock absorbers....85000 km is beckoning...and mixxy gets a little unsettled over bumpy roads around corners

tempted by the tein adj coilovers...but ouch ..2k cost

are they twice as good as the shock abs and maybe new springs( @ twice the cost!)...any sugestions about best product

dont really want to lower it ( curbs and speed bumps are already problematic and i dont agree it looks better), but maybe a little bit ie 1/2 inch

whatdayareckon??????????

Are they VERY good? Yes. Are they TWICE as good? Don't know.

If you've got $2k to spend, then they are a very good option.

second major mod I did - probably the best value too. do it. there are ways of getting them cheaper. If you buy direct from japan they are a lot cheaper but they are slightly different to the australian ones - from what I understand they are valved differently for our poor road conditions. you could get the coilovers, edfc and have them professionally installed with wheel allignment for less then the cost of the shocks alone from aus.

Get them off Emilio at 949 racing in the states.

i got some earlier in the year and they cost me i think around $1600 to $1700 landed.

If you want them get them ASAP as his prices are going up very shortly.

Another vote here for Teins here.

You buy an MX-5 for it's fantastic handling and feel (not horsepower) so I think you should spend the extra cash to get coilovers that give you the adjustably to increase the fun factor even more.

I know one of our club members got a fantastic price on Teins from MX5parts.com.au, don't spend extra buying teins that have been shipped to the U.S. first.

Ok, let's take brand names out of the equation.

thinking of it surgically, technically the only difference between coilovers and regular damper/springs is the fact that you can adjust the ride height.

So all things being equal, it really comes down to if you want to lower/raise your car on occasion.

What you should be asking is if the Tein springs suit you better and Eibach et al springs? or if Tein dampers better suit you than Koni et al dampers.

Price is a bit of a determinant on quality but so is driver skill.

Zoomzoom is one of the hardest chargers out there (in Brisbane at least), and he is running much cheaper King Springs(?)/KYB combo and he is consistently faster than others, around Queensland Raceway, with more expensive gear.

i believe the main concern is to match your right height, with the spring rating as well as bound and rebound settings of the shocks. I guess the brand is really an indicator of quality i.e: whether the products are what they say they are and how long they last. But it appears maybe if you get some adjustable shock absorbers and make sure their settings match your current spring rate and ride height, you'll have an awesome car =]

Surgeons are usually accurate and precise, you've butchered it down to a bloody mess where no features are distinguishable . :lol:

If you dont want to lower it then just swap the old shocks for some Koni Sports (yellow)

teins get a b ig vote it seems....and it would be cool to get one of those in car adjustable thingys.but the 1red 5 has to my mind cut to the chase...if the main coilover advantage is lowering...it aint nessesary for me

that leaves new shockers and maybe different springs.adjustable is good...especially if they can have the in car adjustable factor

any suggestions out there re best adj shocker and spring combo for a non jarring ride

1red5 didn't cut to the chaise :roll: he cut the fine print, wrote \"home brand\" on it and said \"hey this looks like that fancy stuff, you might be stupid enough not to taste the difference\" .

Don't end up with a bitsa solution that's a compromise that isn't quiet the height you wanted.

Get a solution that can be tuned to suit exactly what you want, even if it's overlander style clearance.

Springs to suit tein coilovers are cheap, that way you can order them in grandpa spec and still have better suspension then that flea market setup.

I'm sick of hearing about people having to make custom spring mounts or revalve konis.

If your budget is that tight and your happy with the standard height but just want newer shocks keep an eye on ebay, some people sell shocks with very little kms because they want to upgrade to an adjustable setup. Just make sure you can check their ODO to see if they're legit.

Did what I wrote come across as that? :roll: :oops:

Just for the sake of argument, IMHO you still have a fair bit of life left with stock suspension if your car has "just" done 85,000km.... depending on what kind of a life it has led.

Well the "regular damper/springs" are a coilover. But there's a lot more to the shocks n springs vs. full aftermarket coilover debate.

Apart from "ride height" there's the length of the shock body, if the spring has to be preloaded to adjust right height or if the height can be adjust separately, damping adjustments, internal features like piston sizes and valving, construction, build quality, warranty, ability to be serviced, how and how much adjustment there is...

I'm certainly not an expert but I sure feel like you over simplified the comparison. :mrgreen:
