WUN911 I have the same model as you ( assume you mean around 2001) - the low beam is very good but high beam does not have much penetration-due almost certainly to the small reflector. The life fall off on halogen bulbs is factual so if you bulbs esp low beam have not been replaced for many years a new set makes sense. The yellowing of the lenses is the deterioration of the lense coating and possibly the pc lenses feeling the effects of uv. I was always very wary of buffing lenses for fear of damaging the coating but I understand a light buff works well. All the lenses on say Fords have hard coated lenses - without the coating they would fail very quickly.
The HIR is quite interesting- GE product - now licenced by them. The Europeans opted not to use the product and few manufacturers incorporate them. As Hammer said he uses them on hi beam and they could make a difference. Whilst I stand to be corrected my gut feel is that if the focal length is different they may not function as designed when sitting behind a projector lamp( lo beam) . Headlamps are carefully designed around lamp type. reflector and when you change something the light pattern and control may be effective. Blinding others can be real.

Hi folks, Quicksilver here (remember me? I started this thread). Well I went for a night drive a couple of nights ago armed with the info you guys have all provided and I think my problem is simply the lights are aimed too high. Tonight my wife picked me up from the train station in the MX5 after dark and as she approached I was blinded by the headlights on low beam which just confirms the diagnosis. I haven't had a look behind the headlights yet but I pressume its just a simple screw adjustment (on a 1998 NB). I'll see if I can adjust them before night driving again. Ohmygod!! You mean you guys aren't old spanish speaking people? I thought "MX" was short for Mexico and "5" was short for over 50s! I wondered why you all talk about funny little sports cars! :oops: :lol:
