Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has tried one of these bright LED bulbs for the map lights on a NA6?
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2-X9-LED-Festoon ... dZViewItem
Since NAs and NBs don't have roof mounted dome lights, i was hoping of getting brighter map lights.
What size bulb / festoon is needed for that ? 28mm, 31mm, 38mm?
Oh.. and whats the best way of getting the cover off the map light?
Looks pretty fragile! dont want to crack it
Map light (bulb / festoon size) on NA6 ?

Three other options are;
1. Turn the lights up-side-down. This directs more light upwards. I used a small screw driver to lever the covers and the light fitting out.
2. I carry a small map light that plugs into the cig lighter.
3. Buy an rear view mirror that has lights built into the bottom edge (check out the big forum for more info)

Those lights are a very odd looking product. Festoons are designed in std wattages and lengths and you interior lamp is also designed to suit. If you had too much heat it may well affect the lens. Juffa might have the right solution. For serious reading of maps in your car you might need an aftermarket solution. You can buy( or could) map lamps which plug in to a 12 v socket ( cig plug) and these have flexible arms - work well and removed when not wanted. Another option is looking for something else from another vehicle-

the linked lamps are an array of LEDs. LEDs are much lower wattage & therefore heat compared to the standard incandescent bulbs.
i thought about those LEDs festoon replacements as well, but what put me off is that most high intensity LEDs generally have lenses that focus the light into more of a beam rather than illuminating a wide area. they will probably serve your purpose if you want a brighter light focused around the ashtray area for map reading but the rest of the cabin will probably end up being much darker.

Good point... That might actually negate the effectiveness of replacing the bulbs.
I did see some "wide angle" led lights, but that might just be a marketing trick.

My point about design is that the lamp is designed specifically as a package- if you put in a hybrid product, like the one shown,it is very unlikely that it will fit.
I had a look at a Hella cat - map rdg lamp# 2630 is pretty compact 87lx31hx24w- it takes a 12v5w festoon. They also list halogen( 5w) flex arm
map int lamps cat #2633 #2636 Locutus is right about the design intent- the lense may not direct light to a specific area. Some interior lamps are combo units for general lighting and separate switch/lense for map reading.
