MX5 Club of Qld, Jules double U turn run

Just a quick thank from Wendy & Terry to the GC dodgy master for a goooood fun and pleasant run today.

Nice to see a few new members and the usual group.

A thank you to Kim and Clive for leading group 2 ( the old farts group) and Keith and Jo for sweeping the slow runners.

With eyes still weary and adrenaline still pumping from arriving back in Brisbane at the helm of my brand new (7 year old) Crystal Blue NB8B MX5; I departed Brisbane north side for the meet point at the Hinterland Regional Park in Mudgeeraba. The trusty Navman barked directions and as I came closer I got the feeling I was in fact going to end up in Jules’ driveway, the last place my Navman was asked to take me to on the Gold Coast… As I got closer my suspicions were confirmed. The jammy beggar organised the start point a mere stones throw from his front door! With the majority of cars already gathered, I made my fashionable entry to the cheers and whistles of jealous on-lookers (well, that’s how it went in my head)… After lots of bragging, pointing, photographing and ooh and ahhing at my new beast; Jules laid down the ground rules for the run.

With 24 MX5s in the carpark (23 to go on the run) we split into 2 groups; those wanting to see the speed limit and those wanting to see the scenery (who would be leaving 5 minutes after us). Being 500kms old (to me) and having Turanzas stamped 13th week of 2001 (with 50,000KMs under them), my car was going to be in the latter; until a lack of volunteers urged me to take the reigns and jump in the first group.

It turns out it was a sensible decision; a very moderate pace was kept through the first stage of the run along Tallebudgera Creek Rd to the first “U-turn”. This was a perfect opportunity to discover the car and take in the beautiful scenery while I was at it. As the road became twistier and narrower focus shifted and the MX5 was in its element; lapping up the road with its VVT engine singing. I must say, the NB does everything and more that the NA can do; EXCEPT make noise. There was no rattling, no drone from the exhaust, no intake roar… Just performance. I am truly converted.

After the U-turn we headed back down the creek and passed the second group at one of the narrow bridges along the way. Plenty of waving, honking and flashing (of lights! Get your minds out of the gutter!) as we swapped places on the narrow road. We then headed to Currumbin Creek Rd where the road was even twistier and narrower than the last! Unfortunately a bit of traffic along this section meant the group couldn’t even approach the speed limit. Nevertheless, this type of terrain is exciting at any speed, dodging the encroaching trees and Armco! Once again the car was at home. The point and shoot steering and acceleration are pure bliss, but I’m sure you all know that already!

We weaved all along the creek until the second U-Turn had us scooting back down the road and passed the second group again. We stopped in at Currumbin Rock Pools for a picnic lunch and chat session. The regalia was out in force; not just from the boot of John and Marian’s NC, but being worn already by a large majority of those on the run. It is great to see such good support for the club from its members.

What a way to spend your Sunday morning; a short sharp spurt down some very nice MX5 roads. For a change, I arrived home from a Gold Coast chapter run before 6pm!!! This kind of sojourn is very refreshing for those who can’t afford to devote 1/7th of their week to the car all the time. So a big thanks to the run leader, Jules!! Well done mate; had a blast. Thanks also to everyone for making it a 23 car event! Jules was saying today how he remembers Gold Coast chapter events with a 3 car turn-up… How times have changed.

Ahhhhh..

Wish I could have made it today. M&D came over to see the new house, and I had a bucket load of work to do, in setting up the new office desktop computer, setting up the office to make it functional, and actually doing some work.

The joys of moving, setting up, and consulting.....

The weather would have been perfect for boosting too............

If only the learner-driver infront of us on the way home would learn how to get the fudge out of the way.
He/she was doing an average speed of 40km/h and braking to 20km/h every time there is the slightest hint of a crest or if the road wasn't perfectly straight. No kidding

awwwwwww.............Gail, you should see 3 MX5.....no, 4 MX5 colours in the flesh before passing judgement......Crystal Blue, Cerrion Silver, Splash Green & Evolution Gold............i've yet to see a photo that does ANY of these colours justice, I love Crystal Blue on an MX5

A great day was had by all, congrats to Jules on his fantastic organisation of a run that Kim & I have never been on before, very picturesque countryside, combined with great MX5 roads made for a most enjoyable day for everyone
