Windscreen replacement SE melbourne

Hi guys,

I have a large crack in my windscreen and therefore need to replace it. I was hoping someone on here would be able to recommend a good, yet cheap place in SE melbourne to get a replacement.

As a sub topic i'm confused as to how the crack started as it is between the glass layers of glass in the windscreen, I assume in the laminate. I cant actually touch the crack as both sides of the glass are smooth. Is it common for a windscreen to crack that way? What could cause that?

Please note that the device on the windscreen in for the central locking and alarm. I dont believe that it is the reason for the crack.

Ben, the glass is cracked. It's not the polyvinylbutacite that's visible there. I'd be relocating the alarm device once the new screen is fitted, as it looks like it's wedged in there pretty tightly.
Good luck with the new glass. Be careful you don't get one of those dodgy screens, leaving you with a distorted view. There's a lot of crap glass out there!

Col- I saw some of your earlier other posts and made me wary of replacing my windscreen. I had mine done in a well known MX5 painter repairer and it seems ok. Yr point about sub standard products rings true - OEM is a different ball game. However how does one make the choice when your screen needs replacement ?

If your insurance covers windscreen replacement it's easy, go OEM and get the best. I guess if you're paying and cost becomes a factor, then you might consider one of the cheapies, taking care that it still meets the req'd stds, most of all your standards. Rather than just looking at the view on the other side of the glass, try looking at the glass itself [not while driving], and you might find some flaws.
